123 automatic transmission flaring

Well this is the first time I have used this forum
I have a 1982 300D Turbo with 252000 miles
When I first start up it will not go into drive for 30 seconds or more than it clunks hard so I start off in L
after that as long as I have not turned the car off it is not a problem
It also flares when shifting through 2nd and 3rd
The flaring differs from time to time in it;s severity
I have replaced the plastic vac valves on top of the valve cover
Any ideas

First thing to do would be a service, fluid and filter.

I second that motion.

Usually vacuum leaks cause the transmission to shift hard. Soft shifting is either the trans is getting too much vacuum, or there is something internally wrong. I don't thin you have a vacuum issue. I'd drain the transmission and torque converter, put in a new filter and see what happens.

It takes some time to read through the article below but it is a good article.

http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic20242.html

On mine I was getting harsh shifting. I checked the Vacuum Valve adjustment on the IP but never messed with the Transmission Modulator.
I added a bottle of Lucas Transmission Conditioner Sealer and it took away most of the harsh shifting.

If something is badly worn inside of the Transmission nothing but fixing it will work.

It could be the B2, but better to rule out the less expensive and labor-intense issues first like a fluid flush and filter change. When you put it in drive and it does not engage, it tells me that your shift linkage bushings could be bad, or that your transmission's valve body is clogged.
