1991 300d 2.5
 

Morning everone, I'm looking at a 1991 300d 2.5. It has 257k miles on it. with a rebuild engine at 185k, anyone have any pros or cons on the 2.5 engine, tell me about it. the car is from North Alabama totaly rust free, great body with a small area where the paint is real thin on top and trunk, runs great but a little slow on takeoff. I can get it for 2000 or less, tell me what you think.....Norm

Every W124 peccadillo also affects this car, and some of the OM60X issues are common.

That being said, the OM602 in this car is considered somewhat more reliable than the OM603 6 cylinder engine.

The reliability of the 602 is exactly the same as the 603. The '87 602 and the '87 603 both had head cracking problems, which don't affect the later 602/603 engines, the big difference being that many many 603s were manufactured in '87 (the bad head year) and far less 602 turbo engines were produced in '87.

A search for 124 buyer's guide here will help, many things to consider including engine wire harness, evaporator, transmission, and suspension.

It is highly unusual to have a 60x engine rebuilt, especially at low mileage like 180,000miles. Must've been something wrong, find out the history and why it was rebuilt. Also important to find out what this "rebuild" included and have documentation.
