A/C Compressor Noise- Reminder!!
I recently R/R`ed my A/C system on my `80 300D. When I got it back together and filled with freon (R12), the compressor made a horrendous noise ("horses on cobblestones," "marbles in a can," etc). I freaked out- bad compressor, 300.00 bucks down the drain - AHHHH! Fortunately, I did alot of reading prior to working on my system, and vaguely remembered a Dave Morrison post about the same sound. He said he tightened his A/C belt and the noise went away. I did the same on mine- then NOISE WENT AWAY! This noise doesn`t sound like belt noise or slippage- it sounds like your compressor went kaput. So, before you give up on a compressor, tighten the belt (REALLY tight!).

Be careful. Tightening to much will cause bearings to burn up. You should be able to push the belt at the longest point between pullys about 1/4 inch inward.
