How can you get accurate value on an 83 300D?

Local town taxes came due and the town is assessing my 1983 300D with 281,000 miles as being worth $2200 . I would like to appeal this but I am having trouble finding an accurate value of the car. Or is it really worth this much? I find that hard to believe! I have tried Kelly Blue book but it doesn't give you values for the 1983. Anyone have similar issue? Or ideas? Thanks!

The city I live in values both of my cars at less than $1000, therefore no personal property tax. I don't know what they use to determine value.

Tell them that if it's worth $2,300, you'll be a nice guy and sell it to them for $2.250. It's just a bunch of stinking beauracrats trying to extort money from you in the form of taxes.

Register it as an antique, it limits the evaluation to $500 - at least in CT

What??? Did I read correctly--your town is charging you taxes on your car? Is this in addition to normal state taxes and registration? Unbelievable!!!

Anyway, you should be able to get the value from KBB.com, use the trade-in value, its the closest to actual you will find.

NADA lists classic cars.

I cannot believe your town taxes you on your personal property. That is rather intrusive, I think. Do they have a wage tax as well? Around PA a 1% local wage tax is common.

Yes just like you pay property taxes on your house, my town charges property taxes on motor vehicles. And on top of the town tax, the fire department has their own separate tax-CRAZY!

Oh hey you're in CT! You should be able to register your car as an antique and get the brown plates for it. IIRC it is an extra $15, but limits the assessment to $500 max. I don't know that the limitations might be, I remember the girl at the DMV repeatedly asking me if I was sure:|
"you sure you want normal registration?"
"yes"
"really?"
"yes please"
"well its only $15 extra bucks"
"thats ok, I need money for chinese tonight"
"well you'll save it in taxes, it limits it to $500"
"no thank you, the normal registration will do"
"okay but you won't get the cool plates or tax benefit"
"Well my car isn't all that super cool anyways with its rust and dents so thats fine"
"oh.....ok....well....let me get your plates."

A conversation that has stuck in the back of my mind for some reason. And the girl at the DMV could have been wrong too, but worth looking into.

In PA an antique registration limits when and how often you can drive it.

The only taxes I pay on my cars is in the form of annual state registration that runs from $50 to $60 or so depending on the vehicle. That's one of the five zillion reasons that I live in the boondocks, 20 miles from the nearest four lane road or railroad track.

The term peace and quiet not only applies to the fact that wildlife is the only noise out here, but I don't deal with the noise of all those tax assessors either. It gets particularly loud when they are out in this part of the county. Shotguns can be pretty noisy, even from a distance.

States vary, maybe towns, cities and counties as well.
Where I live you pay personal property tax on just about everything large. House and land, vehicles, boats etc. The city sends you a bill every year.
As mentioned, my cars are not worth taxing, I have antique plates on the CD. You're only SUPPOSED to drive it to and from events. I have yet to hear of anyone getting a ticket, however. Yet, with the abundance of these plates, that may change.
