transmission leak

I have noticed a new leak on my 1985 300td looks like it is comming from where the fill tube goes into the top of the transmission, is there a way to check this without dropping the tranny? also how does this get connected is it bolted on or is it welded on? it is not leaking from the tranny cooler line which is located jsut below the filler line. any sugestions would be greatley appreciated.

Easy enough to fix. Take a close look at the dipstick tube and you will see an allen head fastener. You will need to remove it and the tube support that is attached to the passenger side rear of the cylinder head. After you remove these fasteners you can lift up the tube out of the transmission housing. There is an o-ring where the tube goes down into the housing that you should be able to replace to reseal it.

is there anything that holds it in place on the transmission side? or is it just being held in with the oring and fastner at the cylinder head?

Reread post #2.

there is an allen head bolt keeping the dip stick tube fastened to the pan.

there is a bolt fastening the tube at the back of the cylinder head.

remove these 2 fasteners, and the tube will lift right out.

There is an "O" ring on the bottom of the tube that makes the seal, the allen head
bolt keeps the tube tight to the pan.

the fastener at the top of the tube, keeps it from flopping around and tightly secured.

It'll drain fluid, too

Maybe stating the obvious, but don't forget to have a drain pan to catch the fluid that is released when you pull off the the dip stick tube.

You "might" need to also remove the banjo bolt on the tranny cooler line to get access to the allen head fastener - it depends on what kind of allen tool you'll use.

Pressure wash/degrease the area prior to removing the dipstick tube is also a good idea.

It's still a quick/easy fix.

If you do get the tube out look for cracks or worn areas where something could have rubbed through the tube.
