1983 240D - fuel filter seal?

Hey all,

I am changing out the fuel filters on the '83 240D today and have a question about the spin on filter. Is there an o-ring seal that should be replaced somewhere? I purchased one that was supoosedly for this model, but can't see where it goes? I thought that it probably went between the main bolt (that the filter screws to) and the housing, but the main bolt doesn't appear to want to come out. Is this right?

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS. I should add that just yesterday it started leak a little fuel from around the main bolt - which also made be believe that there might be a bad o-ring in there. Or was the bolt just coming loose?

There should be a seal on the filter that seals the filter to the housing, as well as an o-ring that is on the bolt that hold the filter to the housing. It can be hard to get the bolt out but it should come out if you push on the bottom.

Yeah, sorry, for clarification, I was wondering about the o-ring. I thought there must be one, but can't seem to get the bolt out - I will try again. Thanks.

There are 1 or 2 o-rings on the main bolt. The sizes differ depending on the year. The o-rings can make it seem like the bolt doesn't want to come out. You may need to use a bit of lifting force to get it out.

Also, there may or may not be a copper washer depending on the year.

Thanks! Yes, a bit of force is all that was require to pop it up out. There are two o-rings on the bolt for this model. Both were flattened out. The replacement I had was for the smaller (and lower on the bolt) of the two. I reinstalled, but can't yet start it up to check for leaks until I get my oil pan back on. Thanks for the help.
