78 300SD Engine Question
I'm trying to help a fellow out on another forum (yes, they do exist), and I even suggested he post over here, but I don't think he has.
He's putting a 78 300SD engine in to a '72 chassis car that was originally gas powered. I don't know if the car was originaly carb'd or injected. Unfortunately, that car had previously been b-tardized with the installation of a small-block chevy motor, so who knows what was done to the fuel system on the car. He's wanting to know how the fuel gets to the motor. Do the W116 SD's use a lift pump, and if so, where is it? I've tried looking on EPC, but I can't find anything. I honestly know nothing about this stuff, I just remember reading in various threads about "lift pumps", so I'm wondering. Any assistance is appreciated... Regards |

I believe the lift pump is part of the injection pump on the older 617 engine.

Mounted on the side of the injection pump. It has the primer pump attached.

As long as the last 350 engine was carborated he is good to go just by hooking up the existing fuel line to the lift pump. Gas cars of that vintage had a factory return line as well. He needs one. There is no pump required in the tank. I wonder how his front end is sitting as that engine is quite a bit heavier than both the past engines. I will not say as much as the two previous engines combined yet still very heavy.
