81 240D wont stop running after I changed the fuel filters....HELP
 

I just changed both the fuel filters in my 81 240D, (and replaced my air filter if that means anything) and when I started my car up, it was fine...until i tried to shut if off. car kept running and i had to use the kill switch marked STOP on the engine under the hood. I thought that would reset my system, but NO. Still wont stop when i turn off the key. When I turn off the key the battery light comes on too. WTF?? If you can help, please. Semper Fi, Boston

Check your vacuum connection to the shut off. You probably knocked one loose while replacing the filters. I ended up having a rubber connection fail one year.

The bat light WILL come on if the engine is running, and the ignition switch is on the off position.

It is probably the case that you knocked a vacuum line loose while messing around in there changing your filters. Look at vacuum lines near the firewall and above the oil filter housing area - have you knocked one or more out (probably the brown ones - uhh, I think).

Brown colored vacuum line is correct.

Has anyone mentioned yet that you either dislodged a vacuum line or broke a vacuum fitting in the vicinity of the oil filter housing?

X2. Been there, done that one. Last time I did my 87's filters, I primed and primed, it fired up ... and did not fire down. After a quick "WTF" moment, checked out the vacuum line and sure enough, the one to the ignition was hanging loose. Easy to accidentally bump off. The good news, it's also easy to put back on.:)
