420 SEL seat in a 300SD?
Will the front seat from a '86 420 SEL work in
an '84 300SD? Thanks, Jeff |

Not sure
I'm thinking yes.
I can't think of a single reason why it wouldn't. Of course, I've never tried it.

I'm pretty sure it will bolt in. You might want to look into the electronics.
A last resort would be bolting the new seat to the old base.

Anything up to 1991 I believe.

Yes. I have the full interior (well, the seats/visors etc...) from a 1991 350SDL in my car....even the rear headrests...its pretty cool.
I had to de-fancify the front seats from memory back to lowly direct electric controls. It was not difficult to do, just a lot of soldering!

PawoSD,
I'm only doing the front passenger seat. What did you have to resolder? Something under the seat or in the door? Thanks, Jeff |

If the new seat is a memory seat you'll have to remove the control box under the seat, and all the motors that plug into it will have to have their plug connectors removed, and then the wires soldered to the connector from the new seat, in the proper configuration so that it works the same as the old seat. So all re soldering is on the new (and old to retrieve needed parts) seats....the door and connector on the floor in the car remain untouched.

PawoSD,
Thanks for the info. I'm game for the resoldering. My passenger seat has a huge rip in it. I tried the Permatex vinyl repair which did not work well at all and just found a very good seat at the junkyard for under 40 bucks. Jeff |

successful seat replacement
I put the '86 420 seat in the '84 300SD successfully.
Thanks for the input PawoSD. I simply cut the plug off the old seat (which did not have the memory buttons). Then I cut the plugs off going to the motors on the new seat and spliced the new wires to the old plug using wire nuts. The wire colors were the same on the new and old seat motors. Jeff |
