How long to change a steering gearbox?

I think I need to change the one in my 82 300cd. It appears to be leaking from the body of the steering box. Has anybody else had this happen?

My indie wants about 3 hours for it. I thought that might be a little strong.

2-3. Its kind of a 2 man job, you can do it by yourself if you can push 50-75lb in the air and hold it without locking your arm for 10-15minutes.

Can't you use a jack for the second person?

No clue on the seals, I just bough one from the junkyard that was tight. Unfortunately I realized it was at the end of it adjustment after it was in the car but its still way better than the old one.

Jack will help but it wont really do the job. There is a good amount of moving/rotating etc. to get it right.

I was going to ask that too.....why not just lift it up sitting on a floor or bottle jack?

My replacement box has the arm on it so they would save the time for changing that. How much of the time was for the splines?

I've changed out a box on a w123. It took a couple of hours and that is doing it by myself. I used a regular floor jack to get it up there.

But because there is stuff in the way to get to it's final placement, you can't use a floor jack to get it the rest of the way. You might be able to use a bottle jack though, but I didn't do that. I bolted the steering rod to the coupling which help in holding it up and the last part I scooted the jack aside and muscle it in while putting a mounting bolt in.

Regarding the spline. It's not that hard. There are hash marks that tell you where to place it. It's basically set at 90 degrees from the frame of the car.

Cool! Thanks for the photos.

It appears that there is a break in the gasket on the rear cover of the steering box. Is it possible to change this with the box in the car?

If it was the bottom cover, yes. The rear cover, not likely. But it would probably be better to remove the whole box to redu the seal.

See link for a pictorial...

After reading and thinking about this thread, I've decided to make a trip to PNP and see if I can get a spare steering box. Mine has a very slow fluid leak.

Looks like it is best to pull the box with the steering arm attached, right? Any special tools I should pack? Do I need a pickle fork to get the steering arm connection at the other end?
