Standard transmission sloppy shift

On my 82 240D 4 speed, I find it way too easy to shift into reverse rather than 1st. Not that it goes in gear moving, but at a light I always have to double check before I need to take off. Shouldn't there be some resistance putting it into reverse? Is there a spring or adjustment I could check? I bought the car this way, so I have nothing to compair it to. Thanks in advance for a reply.

You should have to lift it slightly to get to engage reverse

I wish I had to do that for reverse. Does anyone know where I should be looking for remedy to fix the problem? Any info to point me in the right direction would help. Thanks.

It will require some exploratory surgery of the shifter. Years and years ago I bought a new one ton in a community about 100 miles from home and I happen to be there in my 240D. As a courtesy for buying the truck, they offered to bring my car home on a roll back. The guy loading the car on the one ton was ignorant of a German shifter and tried to force it into reverse.

I had to remove the boot and find out what was wrong. It was a long time ago, but as I remember, I had to use a bar to pry a pin back into its proper position.

I expect that if you pull the boot and start looking at how it operates, you can figure it out.

There is a top hat shaped plastic bushing in the shifter. If this goes bad you will have such sloppiness in the shifter. I think it can be replaced without removing the shifter...I have only replaced it with a shifter that is out though.

worn bushings on the shift rods will make it do funny things too if the shifter is moved from one car to another and the adjustment is lost.

I purchased the bushings for my 190d 2.2, 5 speed, from Phil......have yet to install them.....but from the conversation that I had with Phil regarding transmission shifter bushings.....I recommend you phone him, and ask...
