Something is wrong with my baby...

Ok, the saga becomes stranger. car starts and runs. however, when I
loosen the banjo bolt and pump the hand primer pump, NO FUEL COMES
OUT at the banjo bolt! AND, the hand primer pump feels like I am
pumping nothing but air! but, the car starts and runs, something
isn't right......

For starters, fill out your profile so we know what kind of car you're talking about.

it's on my profile, 1991 560SEL and 1984 300DT. since I'm on the diesel
forum, I'll assume people know I am talking about the 300DT.

I think Scott98 meant signature. The sig pops up with every post, the profile does not.

What Banjo bolt are you loosening?

If the car starts and runs, why are you messing with the fuel system? Just trying to get some background here.

the 17mm that sits on top of the large screw on fuel filter. it has three hoses
coming out of it, one of which is the return fuel line going to the injectors.
I'm loosening it and pumping the hand primer pump and getting no fuel and
absolutely no pressure on the hand primer pump. but, the car runs, but
exhibits a knock or clank coming from the area of the number one cylinder.
I'm thinking that there is air in the system.... so.... do I just pump the heck out of the hand pump?

sounds like your primer pump is bad. Is it one of the new style?
If the car runs properly, dont mess with it!!
If it isnt broken , dont try & fix it !!!

...is that Jimmy I hear???

Unless I am mistaken, your fuel system should purge all the air once it is running. Using the hand pump is far less effective than the fuel pump.

How far out are you pulling the 17 mm bolt? In some cases there is an O-ring seal between the bolt body and the bore in the cap. Not sure about your model. Older ones had a flat, copper washer and they will leak if you loosen them. The ones with O-ring seals don't always immediately leak - they have to be drawn out. In any case, pumping the hand primer pump should make a buzzing noise if the system is solid (meaning all fluid, no air). I am also slightly confounded why something that seems to be working and doesn't leak is bothering you. Typically if the hand pump is broken, it leaks when you use it. When it gets really bad, it leaks enough air in that the pumping won't clear the air out of the system. It also makes a mess as Diesel stinks and is unfriendly to asphalt surfaces.

OK, drove the car around the block. loosened the #1 injector line and let the car sit for a few hours. came back and VOILA!, the hand pump is now feeling pressure and pumping fuel. started the car but there is still a click, click, click sound coming from near the #1 piston. I'm going to pull the valve cover to reinspect the new valve stem seals/new valve springs and recheck the valve adjustment. if that checks out, I may pull the oil pan and see if anything has come loose. if that checks out, the other option may be a prechamber issue....... the saga continues........

Yeah, I should have been less sensitive to the outsiders. "It has a strong aroma" would have been more accurate. Thanks. Jim

It isn't courteous to expect folks to go peruse your profile. Put it in your sig or supply it with your question.

sig changed, that way it will be easy for people to see the cars involved. as far as people having to make two clicks of a mouse to check out a profile, I didn't see anything on the forum when I signed up that suggests that the cars be listed in the sig. however, in the interest of "fair play" and "making life easier", consider it done.
