white smoke-definitely OIL

Ok,here's one. I own a 1985 sd w/ 198 k on it. Runs really well, idle, etc. Valves adjusted, etc. Only problem is I can be tracked from a stop by the white cloud behind me. Mainly when warm and more pronounced after a stop. I just checked intake side of turbo and shaft has very little if any forward and backward play, but can wiggle shaft top/bottom/side to side- how much play is normal? ALSO, seems to rotate kinda stiff. If I reach inside intake end and try to turn it will; but it will not "spin freely", if I try to spin it. I am thinking maybe turbo seal? Oil separator is sealed. Intake side of turbo has little wet oil in it, but don't think it's that much. Garage drove it around block and pronounced rings are gone. Hard time believing that one..OPEN FOR IDEAS!

Could be the turbo seals.

Does it smoke very lightly, or not at all..........at idle?

Is there a massive cloud of white smoke when you first take off..........if you step into it heavily?

Has your coolent level been decreasing or oil in your coolant?

This was the Origional thread with Low compression.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=258757&highlight=Marvel

His response from another thread:
Well it loosened the carbon as the compression has increased in the two low cylinders! # 3 was 320 is now 380 and #5 was 160 and is now 340! Drove it about 20 miles hard and fast, there was some carbon coming out the exhaust! Will be taking iton two longer trips this next week: Monday I'll be going over to the coast (SLO) and the SoCa gtg on next Saturday. The trip over the Grapevine should help!

smoking is OIL

Smoke after warmup is from stop sign start (embarrasing at downtown). Smokes slightly after startup and at steady speed. White-blue smoke smells like burning or hot engine oil. Have pulled intake side of turbo - J tube. Small amount of oil on intake side. Shop is doing exhaust work and will check for oil in that end. Front to rear (axial?) play is minimal if any. Shaft side to side and up and down (radially?) is felt; possible 1/32" or so. Rotating intake impellar with finger, shaft turns smoothly, but does not seem to want to spin freely after release. Does this sound like turbo going bad?

Replace the turbo.

how much oil is the car consuming?
how quickly is the oil level dropping? you are checking the oil level right?
smoke can also be attributed to injectors leaking profusely, or a bad cam not opening the intake valve...

smoke and turbo

1985 300sd. Runs GREAT. . . But smoke at start from stop sign. From previous threads, consensus says that it may be the turbo seals. Past thread describes oil pooling on intake side at low speed and not getting into intake/engine until after takeoff from stop. Sounds exactly like what I have. Blowby in valve cover is very little-pulled cap while running. Very little oil in air cleaner housing, as I fixed the separator per thread instructions. It is DEFINITELY oil burning at takeoff. White and smells like it. Any good way of testing the turbo seals, or should I remove and check for wet areas? Confuzzzed. Hope it isn't an engine going out.??????

Is there some reason that you don't want to take the previously given advice?

That's certainly your prerogative, however, it's not productive to post another thread asking the exact same question as the first thread.
