603 windage tray

The 603.970 engine comes with a windage tray, which I am planning to install in my 603.960. Can anyone see any disadvantage to doing this?

Basically a tray beneath the crank to keep the oil down in the sump and from sloshing up and hitting crank/rods during hard cornering.

For when the sump baffles aren't enough. In the .970 it is bolted to the bottoms of the main caps.

That's what I'm thinking, ... but before I mill the oil pan baffles to make it fit, I thought I'd ask the pros here.

A windage tray is a good thing.

On the late 606 engines, the rear baffle is riveted to the oil pan. The front section is bolted to the main bearing caps.

The 603.970 is two-piece also, both bolted to the main bearing caps (I hope I can find where I put those special bolts).

If that is a part from the 350 d motor, I believe there have been issues with the bolts holding it together coming loose and getting into the oil pump.

Of course that locks up the pump and the engine is ruined.

IIRC the windage tray alters the height of the oil pump pickup. Make sure the geometry works.

Here's some shots of the 606 windage trays, and a comparison with the early 603

I'd be very reluctant to second guess the factory engineers on something inside the crank case, I think.

They added it to the later engines for a reason, and if you're gunna be turning some corners...

Interesting, the front 606 piece looks like my front 603 piece.
