Saved $650-DIY blower motor
 

Rather than pay my local tech $650 to replace my A/C blower moter in my '95 w124, I decided to have a go myself. Went to the pick-a-part yard for a trial run on a junker. Bought a couple of good fans there, maybe I'll sell them on Ebay. That was helpful, but not the same year as my car. So I started on my own car. After breaking some plastic and a few small cuts to my hands, I got the blower motor out. It was 111 degrees that day, and I was working outside. Motor was stiff, would hardly turn. Went to an electric motor shop, just for grins, they wouldn't touch it. While there, I began to shake the motor and tap it with a screwdriver. Suddenly, bits of foam rubber began to fall out. Lots of it. And it began to free-up. So I went home, liberally sprayed some AeroKroil ( by far the best penetrant I know of) into the bushings, and soon it began to spin freely, like new. No endplay or shaftplay anywhere. I added a little 3-in-one oil to the bushings, and re-installed the motor. Works perfectly. Also replaced the original-looking cabin filters ($51 from the dealer). What a difference! And a great feeling of satisfaction at having saved/earned $650. After doing it once, now I could replace the motor in less than an hour, and not break anything, but that's what practice is all about. Try it.

Now, next time let's get that camera working, eh! ;)

3 in 1 has vegetable oil in it, tars up & oxidizes. use a different oil next time.

Actually, the blue and white can of 3-in-1 is the kind to shy away from in fan applications {bushing and shaft applications for example}
The black and white can of 3-in-1 is the proper kind to use, and works pretty well.
There is an oil called "Zoom Spout" turbine oil which does a very good job, and has a unique applicator.

I just did that on my W210. The regulator went out on the original motor and I found out that they no longer make that version of the regulator. So I had to buy another blower, regulator and wiring harness.

Picked up the blower fan from a local junk yard for $30 from a 2002 W210 and they pulled it! Back to ice cold A/C.

What other blower motors from different year/model MBZ would fit in a 1987 560sl. Anybody know?

This guy sells just the motor for less then $150. You'll need to reuse your cage and fans.

I just did that job on my sister's W201....it wasn't bad. The original motor was just about done....it still ran ok but squealed, the brushes were worn all the way down, and the motor shaft had play in it. So we bought a brand new shiny motor, and swapped the fan cages over to it. Works perfectly.
