No physicall difference. The difference is internal, the pre-'85's have a 1600rpm stall speed, while the '85 has a 2600rpm stall speed....its awesome. I just swapped an '85 trans and torque converter onto my car a month ago and it is a huge improvement. It allows you to get all of the torque from the 617 even at low speeds (and take-off)...so it pulls like crazy!

You can get one from donor '85 with a 722.3xx trans or have your torque converter rebuilt with your specified stall speed at a reputable trans shop.
Yes.

So the higher the stall speed the better or is there sweet spot range for the stall speed...

The sweet spot range is between 2300-2700 rpms.

Yep, the 617 makes much better power from 2200-2700rpm than it does at 1600, so it pulls a lot better with the later torque converter. It gives a weird sensation until you are used to it (like a slipping trans), but its normal.
It is possible to swap just the torque converter, but the trans would have to be removed to do the swap.

Maybe I should stop beating the dead horse? You already know who has several pre 85 and an 85 617 with transmission just sitting around....

The '85 Cali version came with the 722.416 and uses the same stall speed as the '85 Federal 722.303/315. But the torque converter is physically different in the spline setup. So they will not interchange.

So it laggs at low end and really picks up @ 2600 RPM, just like the 300SDL? Right?
