Just wondering......How do you name your car?

As a fairly new Mercedes owner(3 cars in 5 years), This is the only group I've been in that name all thier cars. (well mostly)

1)How do you go about picking a name?

2) It is totally random?

3) Is there a calculated list like the weather channel uses for storm names?

4) Is it cause we love them kinda like our childern or pets so they must be called by a individual name? or because we put blood sweat and tears into them?

One thing I've observed is it sure seems like if you own one Mercedes you are gonna own more!!! Not if, when!

I once read an intersting psychological piece on the difference between people who name their cars and those who don't. I wish I could find it again - if I do I will be sure to post it.

I admit, there is something strange about anthropomorphizing cars by giving them names (and in some cases genders), but my wife and I have always done this.

It usually happens within the first day to week of buying the car and the name just sort of comes out of conversation about the car and eventually sticks. For example, our 95 E300D was so much more of a car than our previous car that we just referred to it as Tank - that stuck. When we got the 240D our kids got in on the naming. It being white with some black trim, my daughter decided it looked like a panda bear. We once saw a panada at a zoo named Ding-Ding. Since the 240D is smaller than the E300, it became Baby Ding-Ding.

Befriend it and the name will come.

Once I get to be good friends with them they open up and tell me their name.

Are you spending enough time with them?

Well.....with me; I never named a car until I joined this forum. Granted, I did join in January, 2007, about 2 months before I bought my first one.

I haven't named all of mine, but some......well....the name just made sense.
  1. Elegant Madame --- the big "lady" from New Orleans.
  2. Candy --- with the sweet engine.
  3. baby polar bear ---- white, 300SDL with how many miles? One family (mother & son-in-law) car.
  4. Chameleon ----- name says it all.
  5. Coda --- this one has an interesting story. It was a "family event". We put about 10 "approved" names in the hat and I drew "Coda" out of the hat.

I can't think of a better name than "Mercedes."

Spanish girls have always held a tender spot in my heart anyway....

Mine is "Mercedes" but mispronounced for the same reasons grandmas get nick names like "Maw-maw" and the like.
One of us kids tried to pronounce "Mercedes" and it came out "Mer-si-dees".

Gee, if we all could only be as smart as though who do not succumb to the foolishness of naming their autos.....

One thing I will add is that a name can't be forced. And I agree with someone above that it usually comes to you quickly, or maybe not at all.
My white wagon is "The white car". That is what we always ended up calling it, and a forced name after a certain point just forced the issue too much. It is more of an organic process.
Tyler is very good at this endeavor........
