Have to Vent

The big question is should the Vacuum system that operates the all the vents in the dash operate at idle. I removed the dashboard so as to troubleshoot the system and after replacing all of the vac pods I can't seem to get them to operate at idle. After checking with a MityVac it seems there is not much vacuum at idle. Once I vac the system with the mityvac it seems to operate ok. Since I can't drive the car with no steering wheel and dashboard I am not sure this is OK....Maybe I need to drive it to develop some vacuum in the chamber in the trunk...thanks in advance...love this forum

If you don't have much vac at idle then your pump is dying and should be replaced.....there should be almost as much vac at idle as there is at higher engine speeds.

The vacuum keeper in the trunk is for the locking system only.

Have you tested the vacuum under the hood?

Vac pump is new and vac from the pump is good when isolated from the rest of the system. I must still have some kind of a vac leak in the pods somewhere.

YEs, you do have a leak some where. Luckily you can test all the systems from underthe hood. Lots of time you will find the rubber joiners will crack and leak. Under the hood, Yellow is locks, green is HVAC, brown is the engine shut off.

My post from last weekend was one of frustration about the vacuum system but with increased persistence I figured out what the problem was. At some time in the distant past I changed the ignition switch which also included the vacuum switch for the shut off. Apparently I reversed the vac leads on the switch and lo and behold no vacuum thru the system. I did not realize this was so critical to the operation of the Vac system. But now it works perfectly and because of all the other stuff that I did to increase the tightness of the system it works better than before. Thanks for the help......
