Is there a trick to removing the mono wiper arm?

Ok, so here I am scratching my head so hard that I think I lost a patch of hair now. I'm trying to remove the mono wiper arm per FSM sheet. Mine is the type with the little plastic flap, flip it up, and then unbolt the single allen bolt. I tried removing it, but it does not want to come out. Whenver I get into these situations, my natural inclination is to rip the living hell out of it w/ one good tug, but its one wiper and I dont want to lose it. Of note, when i put the screw back in, the wiper sounds like hell. It used to be pretty quiet. I'm wondring if all the yanking did something bad.

Tips?

Bob

I'd be interested to know this myself. I do know that there's a company that manufactures replacement gears for Mercedes odometers and they also make an improved version of the wiper gear.

124 Mono wiper arm removal!

The easiest way to do this is to turn the key on, turn the wiper on, when the wiper gets to either point of maximum extension (the upper driver's and passenger side corners) turn the key off stopping the wiper motion. The entire plastic covering with the small square flap is completely removable, remove the 5 mm Allen head bolt, I then get a corrugated cardboard box and break it down so that it lays flat a couple layers thick lay it on the windshield under the wiper arm outer end, then lift the wiper arm to its upright locked position and remove the wiper blade. With the Allen bolt removed and the wiper arm lifted you can exert a twisting motion to the lifted wiper arm and while doing so ease the wiper arm off the wiper shaft. If for some reason you still can't get the wiper arm free, lower it onto the protective cardboard and using a hammer and a small block of wood directed onto the inner end of the wiper arm and give it a "short, sharp shot" or two to free it. Good Luck!

I have attempted to remove the arm from two different 124's without success. I remove the bolt and it looks easy to force open the split part wider, but I've broken screwdriver tips trying.

I was doing the fan motor in both cars, in the end there was no reason to remove just the arm, I removed the whole wiper unit.

x2

I've removed the motor from 5 124s complete, no reason to remove even the wiper blade first.

I was able to remove the wiper blade from my '87 300D by removing the 5mm Allen head cap screw, squirting a little oil in the threaded hole, and then gently wiggling/pulling until the arm came off. Once off I cleaned the surfaces with fine steel wool and used a little anti-seize when I put the arm back on.

sheesh had i known i could just remove the whole assembly (which are steps after this step) in the FSM instructions, I would have. grr...

in anycase, looks like i still have to examine and fix the now (somewhat) scraping noise that the wipers make. but that'll be after i remove the entire assembly.

i need to check out the blower motor and see what kind as i bought a replacement motor from the same OM606 95 E300D. i plan to clean this out with some cleaner as well as possibly vacuuming the AC system and refilling it.

billybob, jeremy, and the rest of you guys, i do appreciate your replies and helpfulness

Not original in '94, unless you're talking about a different part.
