Oil light.
Plugging away at the list of issues that the latest acquisition - the 124 - has. Found out today that the inop. R headlamp was due to a melted connector! Had some 100W bulbs in there and it definitely got too hot. Any idea if I can purchase the connector alone, and if so, where?
Here's the one that has me stumped, though: the oil warning light comes on when I make left-hand turns. The oil pressure is fine, and there is definitely plenty of oil in the bloody thing. Right-handers are no problem. Only when I turn left.... Cheers! Jay.

There's no end of connectors at wrecking yards. Anyone who's swapped in Euro headlights with 6-pin connectors has a couple of unused 4-pin connectors. 6-pin connectors don't cost much at the dealer so 4-pin connectors are probably only a couple of bucks each as well.

Bet your glad it was a melted connector and not fried wiring!

When you turn left, the oil rushes into the "extension" that Mercedes added to the right side of the 603 oil pan to increase its capacity. The low-oil float switch is supposed to compensate for that by responding slowly, so that the light doesn't keep coming on like yours does. That suggests that it's time to replace the float switch.

As to the light, maybe the switch is gummed up. I don't know what's safe to clean it with but I'd try brake parts cleaner. Or soak it in Mobil 1 for a few days. A new one is about $55 plus o-rings. I think it's a common part with engines of that period so a used one from a 300E should work.

Plug.
It's the plug for the bulb itself. Where the 9007 bulb ass'y. connects to the wiring harness in the headlamp housing.
So the idiot light is nothing to worry about?!?! THAT is good news. Today (weather permitting, as I'm going to try to work in my driveway) I'm going to replace the LF window regulator, injector bypass hoses and try the 16x8's. I'm pretty sure they're the same wheels used on the bid dog (500E). Many, Many, MANY thanks, gentlemen! Jay.

Oh, that connector. An auto parts store might have something you can use. The PnP probably won't charge you for one. Can you get the wires out to transfer to another connector or will you have to splice wires upstream? Time to go Euro
16x8s are a very tight fit in a 124 other than a 500E/E500. It's all in the offset. Good luck with that. Sixto 87 300D |
