Post What to do, what to do??? Wife's old car has a problem. (Updated)

Well the little woman came home one day last week an said her A/C wasn't working and the blower is not working. Well I guess the Climate Coltroller died as the sight glass is bubble free from what I could see.

I am no longer able to turn wrenches or crawl on the floor so I will probably either sell the car or trade it in before winter, it has had too much invested into by me and since the wife is no longer working and I am retired we really can do w/o two cars. She has backed into things with the car like she has been doing for as long as I have known her.

Not sure what I can get for the car, it needs some minor body work, and painted. I know the tape player works, all the gages work as does the CC last time I drove it. The radiator, and a/c exchanger in front of that is new, it has about 5,000 to 7,000 on the new Injectors (pop tested a adjusted before installed) and new glow plugs, the Yohama tires are like new with only 20 miles or so on them. If the a/c worked I would not be afraid of driving it to CA and back to MO because the drive train is strong and and in good shape.

The car has some minor things that need fixing that would not be a big deal with anyone knowing how to turn a wrench. My wife treats a car like a lot of people I know, they only drive it and never clean or service it unless they have someone to do it for them. I think she has cleaned the inside of the car two or three times since she started driving the car, she has washed it about the same number of times. I washed it 3 or 4 times just to not have people talking about the wife and the dirty car she drives, but any more I just say to heck with it becauce she never says thank you.

Can anyone here give me an idea what I should get for the car if I sold it to an individual? Or on a trade in?

Miles, condition, what works, interior color and leather/'tex, exterior color, and options all fall into that estimate.

Sorry you're considering parting with it, have to do what makes sense.

This is about 2 1/2 years ago when I bought the car, wife just drives them, she is too lazy to clean one and too cheap to have it done. It is why when I handed over this car to her I told her she had to take care of it or I would never again sign the paper to buy her another. I have no plans on replacing the car, if she wants another she can get a job and buy her own car.

I drove the car myself for a couple months after buying it and it drove like a dream.

I think the two left side windows do not roll down, and power head rest on passanger side does not work and the seat will not lean back so switch is probably fubar, sunroof and all the lights and guages work. It is a 18 year old project car now, and I am not messing with the thing. It has about 210,000 on the clock. IP was replaced about 40,000 mile ago also, or so I was told by the dealer.

Nice color, good looking 'tex, should sell well if all else is good.

If not over 200,000miles I'd guess it's around a $4500 car.

AC and blower not working might just be a fuse.

If everything else was perfect or close to it I'd pay $2500 for it since comparable ones with working AC can be had for $4000.

Trade-in value is about zero for any car with over 200K miles.

Is there a reputable independent MB shop that can give you an estimate on fixing the AC? Don't take a loss without an estimate.

Yes, but it's not that nice now, I hope to get $2800 range. I would like to get my repair money back is all, figure I have put that much in it since I bought the car.

You know I never thought about a fuse, where is the a/c fuze located? Wife said it just quit one day and hasn't worked since. Been too hot 90+ and humid 90+ here to go in the garage and tinker for this 64 year old man who has enough on his hands raising two grandson full time.

If it is like the older 126's there will be a strip fuse near the fuse box by itself covered in a plastic flip cove/box 1/2 wide and 2" long with a large wire entering each end. That is the blower fuse.
Sorry I just know 126's, but hope it helps.

I'd fix it/look into the issue. Probably a simple fix. That car is like the diesel version of my 300E! Beautiful.....looks the same as mine in every way, except for the engine. And mine has leather (I'd prefer tex)

Guys I thank you for the input, help and offers, but for you guys interested in buying the car needs detailing bad after two plus years of grand kid hauling and never even vacuumed out but once or twice. She backed into something twice in one month and second time I had to install a new tail light assembly. I wanted to get through the winter this year with the car before getting a van of some type to haul kids and their junk, but not w/o a heater. I will try to do some new pictures to show what it looks like now, her last two new cars she did the same way. The 02 Jetta I had to have detailed before I could take it to a dealer to see about trading.

As for fuze I know the fuzes in the fuze box are ok, but I did find a loose wire on the drier/receiver but didn't know where the big blower fuze was located. I remember seeing the box Chadahar spoke about and will check that latter after we get the boys off to school and daycare and let everyone know the results.

This has been a pain typing because of holding a 1.5 year old little boy in my lap while he watches cartoons. But he really loves his old grampa and just has to snuggle with me every morning after he gets up, he looks for me even before getting his mornning bottle.
