85 300D: Another Basic Hose Question
Thanks for the ID on wastegate hose. Again, referencing a 1985 CA 300D. Have a oil spatter leak where the breather hose (?) from the CA air filter connects to the head cap (shown in box on right of image). Also, very wobbly loose connection where that pipe meets the breather hose near the air filter housing (shown in smaller red box to the lower left of other box). Two questions:
1) Is it leaking because I need a new hose or gasket? 2) What is the name of the hose and gasket I need? Thanks in advance. Have car torn up so might as well get to this stuff in this peachparts order. |

A breather hose.
An excellent source for detailed parts info is the official M-B online site - you need to register, but it's free. A bit cumbersome to use at first, but you'll figure it out. It didn't recognize my '83 VIN, but you can ID your car by other info. http://epc.startekinfo.com Or the peachparts site: http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=&yearid=1983@@1983&makeid=63@@MERCEDES+BENZ@@X&modelid=6191%3AMBC%7C1504%3AED%7C10000135@@300D&catid=240497@@Air+Intake&subcatid=240516@@Breather+Hose&mode=PA Or -- e-mail Phil direct and he'll set you up. But while you're in there looking for leaks - don't forget to check the top of the oil pan for the turbo return line and gasket, a few o-rings, etc. There's a lot of plumbing on that side of the car. Thanks. Is the fix for the leak at the head a hose replacement? Or something easier like a clip or gasket. Looks like a runny nose, except black.

It depends what's leaking...

Right where the 90 degree breather hose elbow hits the iron head. shown in the picture inside the red square on the right.

Oh, and I have the three piece thing. I think I read there is an upgrade? It's a CA air filter -- would love to clean up this mess.

The "iron head" is actually an aluminum valve cover. If you don't have a clamp on the elbow, try one.
