300d 617 idle speed?
What is the rpm for the idle speed? Is it set with car in neutral, warm engine. Is the 750 rpm on the emission sticker the correct info?

Are we talking about a 617 engine (1985 or earlier)? If so, I believe the correct idle speed range is 650-750. Mine is set at about 550, but that's about as low as you can get a smooth idle.

It depends on the 617. Some have a manual idle speed control knob on the dash so that it can be easily varied.

AFAIK, the N/A 617s have the control knob (like the 240D). The turbos do not have the knob.

this is a turbo thus it has no knob on the dash. ina any case i know where to adjust the idle. But I wasn't sure about the specs adjusting it.

750 is right.

I have mine set around 700 or so in my SD....for a long time I had it around 600....but it had a shaking issue, fine tuning of the idle and rack damper bolt completely eliminated the shaking.
My dad's '82 SD idles around 550......and his '83 is set to around 900....it loves to vibrate for some reason at a lower idle (everything is to spec/adjusted).....so 900 is the lowest point where its quite smooth. My brother's 300D idles around 650ish....and it runs like a clock.

750 is about ballpark for where you want to be.
Some cars like slower, some faster. The answer a lot of people like for economy is: as low as it will go and run smoothly. If you have to do a lot of cold starting (northern climate), you might want to adjust it a little higher in the winter for smoother cold idle. Mine is at 700 but I'm thinking of taking it up a notch for the protection of the motor mounts. If you're having rough idle, though, in the normal range, there are lots of things to check before adusting idle speed.

The idle speed doesn't really affect economy on a diesel....my dad's with 900rpm idle gets better MPG's on average than his 600rpm idle SD.....
And my mpg's were unchanged when I raised mine 100rpm....

Could you list the things that I should check before adjusting the idle speed.

Injector spray pattern, fuel filters, air filter, injection timing, valve adjustment, then maybe rack dampener bolt.
If none of these work for a smoother idle after idle is set in acceptable range of 650-800 or so, then do a compression check. Might have stuck rings or a bad cylinder for some reason.
