Trunk Smells Like Diesel - A LOT!

My trunk smells like diesel, and always has. Lately, however, it seems to be getting worse. I checked the drain line that hooks up just below the fuel cap, and it is connected and runs out of the bottom of the trunk. I thought that maybe it had come disconnected, and I was draining diesel into the right side of the trunk, but it is still hooked up without a trace of diesel around it.

Any ideas? I'm fresh out.

check the rubber on the fuel cap. even if it looks good try replacing it and see if smell goes away.

Most likely a bad "fuel fill neck grommet", an easy fix.

Check the fuel neck gromet. They often turn to goo if you have spilled any biodiesel on them. Or they just get old and cracked. Also might think about replacing the fuel level sending unit o-ring. If you pull out the first aid kit holder look through the hole you will see the sending unit.

The grommet also cracks when contacted by ULSD. I have to replace them yearly.

Where can you find new rubber for the fuel cap?

Seems odd that you've changed your gasket so much. I've only replace one in my wagon in the past 5 years that I've owned it.

The filler cap is the same and the oil cap on the engine, so it should be the same gasket.

My 300D had a crack on the filler neck where it attaches to the tank. I guess it was from someone leaning on the nozzle when they were filling the tank. I fixed it with epoxy putty.

the filler cap originally on the w123 has been superceded several times--it no longer resembles the one on the engine. totally different cap

you have to replace the cap itself--the rubber is not a separate part that can be replaced

You might have to put a little liquid soap around the seal to get it on.
