blower motor removal question on '87 TD

I have read the "how to" posted by JSlabotsky on 1/09/03 and everything went fine until the stage where he is shwn lifting the wiper arm hub with one finger while on my car no way no how.... Would there be some difference in the way the assbly is attached given that my car is '87 wagon? It feels like in addition to the 4 10mm nuts there are other bolts that must be undone in order to lift the wiper arm hub. I am trying to remove the motor and anxious to get going but the plastic cover will not come out until the wiper arm is gone. Would appreciate your help in explaining what have I overlooked.

I've done this job many times to fix my blower motor. Once you have the 4 nuts off the wiper assembly then you need to disconnect the temp gauge and electric plug on the wiper motor.

Then it's a matter of wiggling the motor and assembly out. The bolts go thru the assembly, so you must pull out and then pivot the assembly down towards wiper motor to remove.

Agreed. You pull it down, rotate it up, and out of the cavity. Put the wiper blade in the up/parked position first (where it stands away from the glass for cleaning).

There is a bracket underneath the whole thing: 2 bolts on each side. Do they need to come off in addition to the mounting 4 nuts?

It should just be the four nuts. The bracket you see is probably the wiper arm assembly base. Maybe use some penetration spray, could be that it's hung up/ corroded on the bolts.

First time I did it, I really had to shake that assembly hard to figure out how it came out. It feels like your going to break something but just go slowly and keep at it and it will free up.

Remember, pull straight out from around the bottom of the wiper arm base, once it's free then pivot that outwards towards the wiper motor.

OK I will give it a good pull tomorrow. It is not the side where the mounting bolts are but the center hub that feels "stuck". Will keep you posted.

Mr. Bear:

I just did this a few days ago:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=260624

I first tried to remove the wiper, no need says the guys. So i ended up removing the 4 nuts and the metal clip. Regarding the metal clip, would you mind taking a pic for me? I think I may have lost a part. Look at this diagram here (attached, item #5). i cant recall how the center arm thats part of the wiper assembly sits on top, inside...i cant remember, but i dont think I put this on correctly.

you have to take alot of plastic off before you are able to remove the wiper motor. after you've done it once, its easy to put it back on. just be careful you dont drop hardware down the engine bay.

wriggle the whole thing out of its home. i also had the hood open vertically too. that seemed to help at some stages.

make sure you clean out your evaporator. my cleaning efforts really paid off.

The wiper assembly has a rubber bushing with a slot in the aft end. The bushing slips around a flange in the fixed bracket.

So, in other words: leave that bracket alone?

Also, did I mention that I had the windshield replaced a couple of years ago? Maybe they used some kind of glue to cause it to stick to the bracket?

problem solved!

Want to thank all of you helping me with the issue of "stuck" arm assembly- as I suspected, when finally I have mustered enough courage to put some muscle into the lifting part it gave! The windshield replacement done at some auto glass shop resulted in some sealant coating the bottom part of the hub and creating the resistance I did not suspect based on the forum's input.Part is out and I am going to test the blower motor now!!
