Beware of motor mounts made in china

After buying a 1980 300sd a few weeks ago, I decided to change the oil cooler lines( not a pleasant job) and then the motor mounts. The company I bought the mounts from gave me two different brands. The left one was a meyle while the right one was a Febi which had a made in china sticker on it. After getting the mounts in I started the car and put it in drive only to hear and immediate grumbling or grinding sound on the right side of my car. After spending a half hour trying to diagnose it, I looked down and my brand new out of the box motor mount made in china was flat as a pancake. Needless to say I am a little depressed right now since I have to go back and do this job over. What brand of mounts do you guys usually use in your cars?

So what's the deal with the German OEM replacement parts outsourcing to PRC? I noticed that the last time I ordered parts with Meyle or Febi names on them. When I saw made in china on them, I didn't buy them.

I purchased both my motor mounts and Trannie mounts from Phil at this site. My engine sounds great. However, that was less then a month ago, so only time will tell.

Get used to it. US is not a manufacturing power house anymore.

We cannot get through a day without using something that is made in China. Your cell phone is probably made in China. Car Radio, alarm, TV, coffee machcine etc etc. The list go on and on. China hold the most US Treasury Bond and if they stop buying them then US will be in deep s***. Or if they call the loan... Majority of the stimulus money came from China/Japan/Germany. US is broke.

I refuse to give in to this thought. We actually have the power to force merchants to give us what we want. You and I can easily refuse to purchase anything made in china. No one makes us buy that stuff. The money is in your wallet. You make the decision with every dollar that you spend.
Wanna be a sheep, keep buying chinese crap. It's ultimately your fault if you give in.

Almost all of the rubber I have replaced on my car including the Motor and Transmission mounts are unmarked as to the Country of orgin Uro parts.
The Uro website claims they are made in many different places in the workd.
None have failed so far but it has been less than 1 year on the car for some of the parts.

The ever present problem is like the Bosch Injector Nozzles; one day they are made in Germany or France; the next day India of China (I read they built a big Plant there). When you order parts you will not know where they are comming from; even with a brand name on them.

DJ, you are the man! Well said, I completely agree. But as for the mounts look maybe for a parts car or on ebay, I found a rear tranny mount on eBay for $12 made in Germany the Dealer wanted like $75+ or something outrageous, Bottom line don't go the Chinese route anyone!!

The issue is that one failed mount is NOT statistically significance to brand any mount made in China is crap. In addition, OP had not done a failure mode analysis yet. You can always shop around and pay a premium for made in Germany parts. You cannot have it both ways.

This is a global economy and things are built or assembled all over the world. The Laptop I am using to post this message is made in China.

So much for my 2 cents.

Chinese products equal problems

I'm sitting on a timebomb at work.

Most of our chemicals are bought from China. We don't have enough instruments or workers to test everything we get and have to rely on the manufacturer's guarantee for many items.

I just hope I can get to retirement or win the lottery before the Chinese stuff bites me in the ass.

i use strictly meyle for mounts. reputable mbz shop nearby who did all my motor and drive train mounts says febi and uro are crap and refuse to use it except for certain parts for uro.

replacing oil cooler lines is a major pita. the best way to do it without the hassle is to simply remove the injector pump. with that out of the way, you have access to the bolts which attach the cooler line to a bracket that's otherwise hard to reach.

i recently removed the oil pump housing and oil cooler lines. to remove the housing, i also removed the steering box, just to get to one allen bolt that holds the oil pump housing in place. it's a ****ty job, but someone's gotta do it

what's the mr2's name, tojo?

I've generally been satisfied with the parts I get from a local MB parts supplier, but a couple months ago, I needed a flex-disc for the front end of my 240D driveshaft. They sold me one for $40, in a box where someone had tried to black out the 'made in China' part of the sticker. The rubber felt hard as a rock, and when installed, it was like I had bolted the shaft to the tranny-flange with a piece of plywood! Concerned with the effects of this lack of flexibility on my 27-year-old tranny's output shaft bearing and aluminum housind, I paid $72 for another flex-disc from my local Mercedes dealer and hopefully it's made in Germany, (There was a 'Germany' printed on the box, but without the 'made in') Or at least it's made somewhere with better quality control than the first one.
I realize that the economic meltdown has further pressured parts suppliers to cut corners, so I'll need to scrutinize the parts I buy much more closely.
But in any case, the flex-joint I got from Merceedes does flex sufficiently to calm my nerves.

Happy Motoring, Mark
