Interesting story. My grandfather drove till he was 97, so not that unbelievable. He's 101 now! His car had relatively low miles for the year too.
His interior looked great, but 25 years of never going more than 3 miles from home, always driving below 30 mph and all the dips and turns involved in inner city driving took its toll on his suspension. Low miles doesn't necessarily mean low wear or excellent condition. But it could be a real gem! Can't wait to hear what you find out after seeing it.

This could be a real find, but when you go look at it be sure to frown alot and slowly shake your head.
The knock could be a fuel starvation issue caused by microbes clogging the fuel filter. They "grow" in the fuel tank if it sits for long periods. Had this happen once on my 35,000 mile '83 240D. It's a very scary knock, but went away quickly and I promptly changed the fuel filters. Hasn't happened since. I would do this: Change both fuel filters, then put some Diesel Doctor in the tank as well, it will kill those microbes. After running through a tank, change the filters again. Good luck! And post some pics! |

ok i went to see car.it truly had 50k ,interior was perfect, seats were like new,now i know what there supposed to feel like.exterior near perfect as well, some paint flaking at edges of door, very very minor.engine had no oil, owner had friend from auto school check out noise, pulled oil pan and said bearings were shot.i happened to notice license plate holder with name of my friends mbz shop.he remembered car, belonged to an elderly women who never drove it.current owner was her caregiver and got it at her death.he drove it for a few hundred miles, then noise began and scared him.he had it towed home.engine compartment was very clean, but my shop friend told me that car had been severly overheated with resultant bearing noise that was never taken care of.i have access to another motor, but owner had one person before me to show car to.they bought it.im not really feeling too bad,it is an auto and would be a slug even with low miles.ill wait for another find.sorry no pics, but imagine a near perfect 240 d interior and body.

Haha...Auto 240D's aren't too bad. Just make sure your throttle linkages are adjusted, and drive it. They're "leisurely". If the body and interior is in top shape, swap in another engine
I'm sure you could always swap in a 4 speed. I would think a clean, rust free (garaged) chassis would be worth it.
