Looking for a turbo rebuilding shop.

I might need to have the turbo rebuilt in my 300sd (617 eng, Airesearch Garett).

Looking for a good shop. I live in Seattle but of course I dont mind shipping anywhere as long as it is worth it.

Any advise?

Thanks

I can`t help you with the shops.
I was in Portland all last week, so I hit 3 of the LKQ yards looking the inventory over.

I did notice 2 83 300D with good tight turbos. I felt the input shaft, turned good w/o any up/down side play. most have a good amount of play.

I would have pulled them, but was short of time. think they are around $60.00.

This was at the damascus yard out on Sunnyside off 205.

As I was leaving they were just setting a 81SD in line.

Not all Junk is Junk .

I sent mine to these guys last summer and they did a great job.

http://www.gpopshop.com/

It was fairly expensive though, I don't remember if the check I sent them was for $350 or $450 but I think it was probably closer to the $450 end of that. They did a good job though; in addition to the internal rebuild they also welded a crack shut that would have been a problem in the casting later. So I can't complain.

Hey Charlie, were those 300D's really picked over in the Damascus yard?

They were all in pretty sad shape, I made notations in my note pad things that were of interest.
the one 83 had a tight turbo and the other 83 had just a slight amount
of play. far less than the one on my 85.

there is an 85 300D ukn milage, picked over, but does have the 2:88 diff.
74 240D manual trans, 79 white 240D blue interior, manual trans. I pulled the shifter and oil gauge cluster. this one is a little rough.

72 250 w114 with two good Euro bumpers.
73 280SE good front Euro bumper

87 300SDL with good front rotors w/o any lip on the edge. this one was in a front end colision. no engine.

I usually take pictures to refresh my memory later, but didn`t bring the camera .

Diesel Fuel Injection Service - Portland. These guys go the extra mile. Heck its worth it to make the drive down to P-Town - you can always swing by Powell Books to make the trip even more worthwhile.

Charlie, I actually took a trip down there to see what there was. I saw the cars you mentioned. They were picked over as you said. I was surprised to see that all the 300D's still had their engines except the 85 was without a head. It could have still been a good runner. The cylinder walls hardly had a ridge.
All the 300D's also were missing their dashes so I guess I missed out on getting a good dash.
I noticed something disturbing about all the 300D's. Each one had the corner of the evaporator case busted off just above the fan. What is so difficult to remove that required destroying the evaporator case?
I still got what I needed, the aux fan switch that screws into the A/C dryer, plus a couple of sets of original MB rear speakers with the bezels. I tested the speakers before leaving in case any were blown. They all tested fine. They have a guarantee that the parts are OK or your money back.
Thanks for the heads up about the 300D's, Charlie. Maybe you could let me know the next time you're in town and we could both hit some yards.

Seats.

Hey, DJ! Were the seats on the SDL in good shape? Remember what color they were? Think they'd go in the '87 124? My seats are shot.

I remember that one with the evaporator case broken and the blower laying on the floor. 6 screws a plug and it is out. makes me wonder what people are thinking.

wern`t the cylinders all rusted on the 85? some one gets the one thing they need and destroys the rest for others.
what`s a head $80. I pulled a 97K eng out of a 84 300D rear ended and shoved into another car last month. $257 all components fw forward.

not sure when we will be back, but there is a 4 mo old grand daughter grandma has to see . she was there 3 wks, me one wk.
I`ll be sure to give you a call.

I try to hit the yards here wed to check the new inventory before it gets screwed up. think we get more MB here than what I see at LKQ.

I spend a fair amount of time in that yard on the several 201's out there. The parts pickers are out in droves - times are tough, and $80 is one man's spending money while another man's grocery money. I try to leave things either disassembled nicely or intact if at all possible. Many of the parts I have scored are just laying there, so I try to carefully remove a thing or two even if I don't take it home. One thing is for sure - the diesels are scarce everywhere.

Jay, sorry I didn't even see the car. I only looked at a few 126's in the yard looking for an ACC PBU but gave up when they didn't match up. They had several 126's, even later model gassers.

Damascus.

Looks like I'll be heading out that way later in the week! Thanks, DJ.

Jay.
There's bound to be one with color seats you're looking for. There seemed to be quite a few to chose from.
Good luck.

BTW, there was a C4C section in last two rows. Nothing really worthwhile but interesting to see. All the engines were spray painted with fluorescent green.

OP.

I'm specifically looking for palomino seats for a 124. If anyone runs across any, please let me know.... Black would be an option as well. Especially leather ones from a later car.

To get this moving back in the original direction, isn't there somebody out near Vernonia who rebuilds/modifies turbochargers? Turbocharger Systems. Just found the website.

Jay.
