Weird Autocheck report
I decided to do an autocheck for my 300D to see its past history. Well when I paid the 20$ I was incredibly disappointed. I know there were 3 previous owners, but it only lists my step father as the first owner. Cool I guess, but it doesn't have a previous history before my stepfather bought the car. Its first odometer reading was at 127,795 miles.
Weird Maybe it's past use in the air force has been erased from existence. Seriously though why does my car have no past?

For $20, you shouldn't expect more than an automated search of the records. The older records are probably not electronically searchable.
I restored and sold a 30 year old corvette. I paid for a Texas title search and it was a lot more than $20. I did get copies from old files that were on microfilm and not in an electronic data base. It did reveal all five previous owners back to the date the car was first titled. What did you expect for $20?

I did an autocheck on my 300E before I got it and it had pretty complete information about its whole history.....it had 5 owners! But amazingly only traveled 133k despite it.....I have a feeling it sat around a lot.....it was a Vegas car. Either way, its been good to me and I've had it almost a year....so no complaints here.

In whole honesty..I wouldn't trust them both. Few years back I went to look/buy a very nice Porsche 911 from a dealer. He came up with all the goods, service history, CarFax etc. I drove the car...fabulous. The dealer let me have it overnight. This very same night a friend who owns a bodyshop came to visit....guess what??? 3 weeks early he repaired this very same car under the insurance claim for the sum of $12000.00. We went to his business in the middle of the night and he showed me all the pictures before and after plus all the invoices for the work and parts...needless to say that I went back to the dealer in the morning and told him everything. I didn't want someone else to get screwed. The dealer was furious but he pulled the car of the lot and he went after the CarFax and his insurance company...he never listed or sold the car to anyone in the area...however I don't know if he didn't unload the car on some dealer auction...after all he had the CLEAN Carfax
Bottom line: "Caveat emptor"

I'm just surprised. I see carfax reports posted all the time and it shows records all the way back to the first owners.
How do I redeem that carfax coupon? In another thread it mentioned that they expired. This car was originally from out of state in Springfield IL. That might be why I can't find anything.

Same here, have a neighbor who got a clean carf*x on a "new" Honda, turned out that it was nearly totalled between a school-bus and pickup-truck, auctioned, repaired, sold, and no records showed. He had already bought it when he found this out, carf*x wouldn't even refund his money, said that the warranty only covers what was reported to them.
It's a tool, not the only thing to check.

Carfax doesn't tell the whole story.
My own personal experience: Several years ago a purchased a 2001 model van from a local dealership. The van had 30,000 miles and looked great. I asked repeatedly if there was any damage history, they assured me there was none. After a few months we began having unusual problems for a low mileage vehicle, headlights going on and off, damaged control arm bushings, other odd electrical problems, etc. Then we had the bad luck to lightly scrape the driver's door and found bondo in it. later when I was changing the oil, I noticed a sticker on a part below the battery box with a customers name on it. I got suspicious and ran a carfax, which came back completely clean. I wasn't satisfied, so I researched the vehicle property tax records on the county website and found the previous owner. He couldn't believe the dealer had lied to me about the vehicle, turns out it was in a 40mph collision and the insurance company had paid $11,000 to have it fixed. He had traded it in because it constantly gave him problems similiar to the ones I was experiecing after the car was fixed. I got him to send me a copy of the police report. Moral of the story--don't rely on carfax, they miss very obvious things! |
