So . . .What is your REAL MPG?

What I mean is not the best tank, as we all know that can vary quite alot, but if you have kept track of all the fuel you have put in, and the miles you have driven averaged over a long time (Like since you got the car)

Do you all keep records?
I use Excel:

So you see I get fairly decent mileage . . . for this heavy of a car, and I'm quite happy with the mpg! (Of course if it crept into 40 . . .:D)

Mine (1978 240D) is hovering at 26 1/2, averaged over 12,000. If I recall rightly, the EPA city/highway estimate was 27.

That is very neat. Can you put a cell in to calculate the standard deviation? That would show you the consistency of your driving or you are heavy footed some times.

I used to do something similar but I do not need to do it anymore as I run on alternate fuel.:D

30 ish. 29.5 to approx 31.

The 1987 300D Turbo (W124, OM603, 150000 miles on odometer) has averaged 25.3 mpg in mostly in-town driving (6150 miles in 2009) burning mostly commercial B20.

The 1996 E300D (W210, OM606NA, 264000 miles on odometer) has averaged 27.2 mpg in a mix of in-town and highway driving (5,526 miles in 2009) burning mostly commercial B20.

The 123 is parked and for sale.

Because of the temperament of fuel dispensing pumps, I'd say a standard deviation describes more the accuracy of filling the tank to the same level each time than your driving habits. You also have to account for the effects of winterized fuel if you're in such an area.

Agreed. I can make a difference of about a gallon depending on which side of the pump I park at my favorite station. Overall, these variations should average out.

I check mine on every tank. I also correct it for my odometer error. It is just about the same on every tank. Between 25 and 27.5. This last tank was 26.9 MPG on #2 and mixed city/open road driving with speeds below 65 MPH.

Presented in graphic form. I track every tank. I attribute the increase in the last few months to new delivery valve seals - at least it is the only thing I've done which matches the timing and which might affect mileage.

I posted an older version of this chart a while back after my 847 mile tank, I've since exceeded that tank with one other at 851 miles, which I didn't think was significant enough to post. But I have had enough other high mileage tanks now to know that those were not flukes.

25 to 28 in 240D. I spoil my freeway numbers, because I tend to drive 80+.

I kept track of every tank when I drove my 300SDs. The '83 averaged about 1.5 mpg better than the '80. The worst I was able to manage out of my '80 was 17, but I had to try really hard. No matter how hard I drove the '83 the worst I could manage was 19 mpg.

It should be noted, that most of my driving was done in the Seattle area. (Bellevue, Redmond, Iassaquah, Kirkland and Seattle.) Even though there are so called "freeways", they tend to be congested so I consider most Seattle area driving to be city driving.

The best freeway numbers were 25 in the '80 and 27 in the '83. The average over the one year I had my '80 was just under 20.7, while the '83 averaged approx. 22 over the 7 years I owned it. I was a real estate agent, so most of these were in town miles rarely exceeding 55 mph and often with a car load of people.

With an occasional, once or twice a year - long trip to AZ or CA thrown in. Those trips were my best numbers, but to put into propper perspctive one should consider that these were on western freeways, with 800-1000lbs of people, pets, and gear in the car.

I thought those were excellent figures for such large cars, in their day. My mom's first Mercedes was a California smog-choked 450SEL, which averaged about 13, but varied from less than 10 to over 17. My first Mercedes was a 280 Sedan which averaged about 17, with a worst of 12 and a best of 20.5.

I have an Excel file similar to yours, with almost every tank for my 300D since Jan 2005. My average, which has included a wide range of driving from summer highway to awful winter city, has been 26.25369 with a standard dev of 2.037264. My highest tank was 30.6, although I was sure I had one higher. I've really never done an all-highway tank on this car, which is kind of sad. Haven't done a lot of highway at all in the last couple years, so my mileage has overall gone down ... but last time I did a tank that was half highway/half city, it was 30 mpg.:)
I haven't added to the sheet for ages ... stops at Jan 2009 ... but I have all the receipts with mileage written on them so I can enter them at some point and catch up.

26 years, 210k miles overall average 24.7 for my 83 300D. I did not track highway vs. city. I would estimate this to be 70% city.

sd300td 10-03-2009 12:39 PM

22city, 25 hwy.

sknaffl 10-03-2009 02:42 PM

My 116 seems to get 27 MPG no matter what...city or highway. The 123 usually got around 24.
