Glow plugs read no resistance

Well the reason I checked these things is because on cool mornings, as of late, I will start the car. After the buzzer, the car fires right up but idles like crap and sometimes stalls if I dont hold the throttle. In searching, most everyone said it was a GP issue, even though I would have suspected some kind of cold start fuel issue. ANYWAYS. I just disconnected all the wires to the plugs and with them in the block, connected the leads to the stud and the 12mm hex. In every one I got a resistance reading of 0.00. I'm not using the best quality digital multimeter but I would guess it wouldn't be that far off. The fact that the car starts in the morning tells me they are not all bad. Am I doing something wrong?

It depends on how cold it is at your location. Pull 'em out and put 12V to them and see if they glow.

I suspect the accuracy of you ohmmeter is not that accurate. It should read very low ohm, may 1-2 ohm. If it is all 0.00 then there is no odd man out. ALL are good within the accuracy of your meter. Normally when they are bad, they read high ohm or open circuit. Hope this help.

^ I'll agree, they should read SOME resistance.

OKay so I need to find a more primo multi meter (workin on it) and/or pull these damn things.
SO say my meter is good for reference and they are all reading the same, meaning they are all good. Any ideas of the harsh idle at cold start?

Possibly normal behavior. How cold do you mean by cold (location?)? What year and model are we talking about?

It is also posible that the one or more wires are bad . . . or the relay . . .

I just got done doing this for my 240 here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=2307855#post2307855

Pulling the glow plugs are not really all that hard, I've heard say that the #5 is harder because of the location of the oil filter, but I don't have that cylinder

OR.............

Maybe you just need the valves adjusted.
if the thing starts then the erratic aftermath may be due to valve adjustment.

I live in Ohio. we've only got down into the forties (since Ive owned this car) If all the plugs come out allright, Ill start going down the line. So these cars do not have some device to supplement more fuel on cold starts like on fuel injected gassers?

What car/engine do you have?

If you have a aluminum head they may come out hard . . .give one a try!

No extra fuel . . .

Stuff a rag under the glowplugs (between the engine & injector pump) then you won't have to dig as deep, when it gets dropped.
