What a royal PITA!
The ignition lock on my '87 seized, oh well, common problem. I got the key to turn after 2 hours of playing around, took the lock cylinder out and ordered a new one. Next day, I put it in and guess what: now it's stuck in "on" position! I ordered the ignition switch, took the f***in' assembly out, installed the switch, put it back together - key doesn't turn!
The housing is the only thing left; I took it out and it's rattling suspiciously... I guess I have to finally disable the '85 completely and get it out of there, the only question is, is it worth the effort? Has anybody ever had trouble with the lock housing?

lock troubles are the WORST. i would have a few junkyard igntion units on hand before I dug into it (dashboard removal?). i would also leave the dash off until i was absolutely sure the tumbler will work fine every time

I have a '91 SDL ignition lock assembly w/o tumbler, PM me if you still need one.

DONE...
...and working. Ripped the ignition lock assembly out of the '85, put the new switch on, installed in the '87 with new cylinder -works like new!
The dash doesn't have to come out, all you need to do is pull the instrument cluster and move it to the side. The locking pin is accessible with a screwdriver in between the steering column and the under-dash cover. For all future ignition lock troubles: Don't automatically assume it's the lock cylinder. And your second guess, the switch, is not necessarily the culprit, either.
