87 300D Trans Questions

I have a car with close to 200K miles on but not much knowledge of history.
Experiencing some flare. Runs smoother in warmer weather than cold. Other than the flare it seems to operate well enough. It's leaking from the front shaft I think.

My question is this: is the flare condition eventually terminal or is there a remedy?

Does anyone know an independent in NJ or PA that knows these transmissions well and is reasonable. I had a guy who did them complete for about $1200 but he died. Bad for me, worse for him.

It would be nice to get some guidance from someone who has a lot of experience then I could move forward with a little confidence. I hate to go to your avg repair shop. Thanks. dave

Search K1 for some knowledge. Sounds like the K1 spring could be a factor.

Some flare on all shifts or on one in particular.

2-3 flare is the spring kit, all flare is usually too much vacuum.

Terminal, no. However the more slip during shifting, the more wear to the clutches and bands.

Thanks Guys. That helps. I have to see if the slippage is one or all, with some luck, just backing off on the vac may be enuf to improve things. Appreciate it ! dave
