Don't worry...I paid probably double what my car was worth...I was fairly ignorant on values, and certainly didn't have the guidance of this board to help me along.

That said, I'll be maintaining this car until it's dead or I'm dead. I'm angling to give this to my daughter (currently 8 yrs old) as her daily driver at 16. That way, I can justify buying another. We'll see.

Cheers.

WOW, $99,500 cannot even buy a pantry in San Diego 2 years back. You did not say when you bought it but wish you luck.

There are 'classic' cars that may have collector's value. Those are few and far between but never count your money before you leave the table. I hope it is insured to the value he thinks it is worth. Good luck to him and his insurance $$$ premium.

I paid $400 for my 300d and it has gotten me back and forth to work for the last 7,000 miles. It does have a lot of rust, or maybe I should say cancer, and the transmission leaks about a quart a month. But as long as it moves it is doing its job.

I got my car for nothing. It was my step fathers

I spent about 2000$ on it. Mechanically it needed typical work done since it wasn't driven for ten years.

Minimal rust, since the bondo is starting to flake along where it was originally placed. I might dremel that part out and put some POR-15 onto it.

I need a major infusion of cash. I love my car and I wouldn't hesitate to enter my car into a classic car show.

That's a great deal! My trans is leaking too and it is unfortunate because besides that the panzer wagon is in fairly good shape. I am not mechanically inclined enough to fix the seals.

Your happy with running WVO?

That is precisely what I did - I saved $1,500.00 more buying it from MB of Omaha, than I could have than buying it in Wichita, KS, or Dallas-Fort Worth, TX dealers - I shopped those first - getting their rock-bottom drive-off price on new ones they had at the time.

The one I bought car had 40 or so miles on it when I bought it - it was the only new W210 diesel in stock at the dealer. When I picked it up, it had 75 more on it.

However, since buying that one new, I've wised-up and have sworn-off buying new cars or motorhomes/motorcycles. I'll buy 'em 'near new' and save anywhere from 25% to 50% on what they listed for originally. That's what I did on the last diesel coach I bought - no need in paying the manufacturer all that money, when it's a cream puff one-owner, and many times still in-warranty.

Thanks for the update......my original cost per share was $1,767.00 per share I bought in 1985. -I believe I'll keep it. However, my home's original purchase price in 1986 - hasn't fared as well, unfortunately.

Always exceptions to the rule. The early "S" model 911's are through the roof. You could buy a nice 1973 911 S for about $15k ten years ago. Today that same car sells for $100k+.

Very true, but the driver car market is very different than the collector market. Also, investing in collector cars is very risky unless you really know what you are doing.

The scary part is that I came very close to toasting a friends 74 "Carrera" during a PCA driving school in about 1982 (when they were cheap, and I was broke). That's when I decided that I don't have enough skill to drive old 911s at speed.

I think what someone would spend on a DD is relative to where in the US you live. In NJ, most reputable salvage yards would rather crush an old benz than sell it for less than $500; I've experienced it. These vehicles didn't even run and were not restorable due to extensive corrosion (paint looked fine, but I'd hear "crunch" when pushing on the metal). I've been told that I'm asking too much for my DD ($2,900 for a '80 300D) I'm selling it because I'm short of time, expertise and a reputable mechanic who'll repair the things I have no knowledge about. That's my tw0 cents for what it's worth...

Re-reading my message from a little over a year ago

I've dropped nearly $4,000 total since the start of this marriage. Mostly in tools that I didn't have.

The tools I guess are an investment that keep paying for themselves every time I fix something on my own. I just wish I could put my floor jack in my trunk. Then I would be comfortable changing out any part anywhere!

Depends, looking to buy a mason body dump truck at some point next year, will probably cost $30k-$35k, will pay cash for it. Since they get beat I want new. I much prefer to buy new and keep it for 10-15 years than to buy used and have to deal with 50k miles of abuse the PO put it threw.

My policy of only taking on debt for RE seems to be working fine, I see no reason to change it even for a business vehicle.

I'm not sure that qualifies as a daily driver.

I fully agree with your "no debt" policy, and I would have to think long and hard before borrowing money for RE (I would have to be very sure it was moving in the right direction).

When I'm working it will be, semi daily. Since they get 8mpg I won't be running errands in it that's for sure!

My current Silverado I bought cheap for $7,500 and I could still flip it for a profit. Once in awhile you get lucky, I got lucky!
