HAPPY wiper arm.
Dude, it looks excited!
In all seriousness, '87 124, went to change the wiper blade, and the arm is stuck in the up position. How do I get it to go back to where the wiper meets the glass? Searching as you read this, but if anyone can give me quick heads-up, it would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay.

Not familiar with that car, yet there may be a spring clip type lock on it, inspect closely, good luck.

Got it.
Not sure how, but I got it to release. No, I didn't force it! Took a bicycle tire lever and prized on the middle spring/hook assy. and, with a relatively gentle push, it gave way.
This car!! Jay.

Lube the end of the spring assembly where it catches so that it isn't as hard to force down next time.

Mine did the same thing. I thought there was just some button I couldn't find.

Not sure how you mean stuck in the up position but to remove the wiper blade run the wiper until it points vertical and then turn the ignition off.
Prise the plastic cover off which sits between the turtles head and the wiper arm, then undo the allen key bolt and the complete arm pulls off the shaft. Place a magazine under the arm at the bottom, remove the allen bolt and then put the allen key into the bolt hole halfway. You then push gently on the allen key towards the top of the windscreen, this relieves the spring tension on the arm as you slide it off and the magazine stops that part of the arm thumping the windscreen if the allen key comes out. The allen key just has to go in the top half of the bolt hole otherwise it does the job of the bolt and secures the arm to shaft. If it is tight to remove then place a screwdriver blade where the bolt goes through and open it up slightly. When you fit a new blade if it is complete on the mechanism then allow room at the base for it to fit,it needs to be at least half an inch from the bottom, otherwise you have issues with the blade not sitting flat at the base of the screen and the wiper motor takes a hit as it has its work cut out when it does its sawing action mid screen as the blade drags and gets squashed. So if your arm is up ie away from screen then remove as above and once off hold the wiper blade and then hit the part of the base the bolt goes through with a tap and it will snap back to its normal position. Then again allen key in the bolt hole and tension it and this makes it all straight so you can refix the arm. |

Is this the mono wiper arm? I've always found the pulling it up or down results in an uncomfortable, squeaky, seems-like-it's-close-to-breaking kind of pop. Like I'm forcing some sort of plastic catch that's holding the arm.

This will make more sense than my ramblings above,an allen key bolt over here is a 'hex' bolt over your way.
http://202tech.mkosonen.com/howto/wiper.html Also the link shows how to remove the turtle shell cover, but sadly it is for a later model car.On a w124 you have to take the entire wiper mechanism /motor unit out as one part and then there are I think 6 screws to remove before it comes off. I have fiddled around with the other halfs wiper on her w124 just removing part of the trim to turn the drive with a spanner,it is not a hard job to go further and remove the entire assembly ,probably only an hour first time. I think the wiper design for the W124 changed about halfway through production. My 1991 model has the simple plastic cover which is just clipped on.

Your lucky lol,the difference is the plastic unclips where mine is the alloy one so has to be removed after complete assembly is out.
Saying that maybe all USA were plastic cover ??. But take care of them and keep them lubed properly because a new one costs more than the car is worth to buy from Mercedes, and never pull the arm to try to get them to work if they do not function. |

The '86-'88 had the little door over the allen-head, '88-on IIRC had the plastic cover.
