Talk to me about Blow By

So I went to look at that 84 euro 240d today. It is by far the cleanest car I've looked at so far. Drove like a dream.
Engine compartment could be used to serve food. Owner has 3 diesels and they're all he drives. No leaks. No smoke. No, NO rust, none.Pristine trunk, triangle and original tool kit and jack in place. Owner replaced the back fabric seat with blue Tex seat and has been looking for a set of Tex front seats to replace the fabric ones that are there. Dash has some tiny cracks around contoured areas, but no big splits. New wood kit, very nice. Stereo is replaced and works. Sunroof works well and the air blows cold.
Mechanically the car had excellent oil pressure, 3 bars all the time. Temperature ran about 90 on the highway with the AC on full. It was 100 degrees in Phoenix today. Radiator is a replaced Behr as you can see.
Warm blowby test caused the cap to dance some with a bit of smoke coming out. Is this a problem?
Owner did allow as how it could probably use shocks and perhaps some suspension bushings, but I didn't hear any obvious thumps or bumps or knocks. The ride did seem to me to be a bit old lincoln continental like. Mushy sort of. Hard to say because I haven't driven one before. I'm going to look at a 300CD tomorrow with 82K one owner miles, but am tempted to make an offer on this one right away due to it's simplicity and condition more than anything else. Has new belts, hoses, brake lines, the rear axle boots look good. This guy obviously gives a **** about his Mercs. The owner of the CD says she's spent "thousands" keeping the car going, and that frankly worries me a bit.
I can't get a PPI on this as it's out of town, but feel pretty good about it.He's asking 2800, and I think I can get him to allow 4-500 for tires, etc. Your thoughts please and thanks!

it has a great set of coco mats front and rear too, and the carpet under them is in good shape. Also, new starter, alternator.

Yeah, nice and simple.
Auto or manual?
Blowby is normal.

Another thing you will appreciate about this 240D is the manual HVAC controls. I miss that so much from my '80 240D, the automatic climate control in my '83 300CD is functional, but too much. The manual HVAC stuff has so much less to break down on you.

If you don't mind the snail-pace of a 240D, go for it. That's a great price for that condition. I see w123's in that condition going for upwards of 5k. Especially the Euro's. That's a great deal, and that thing is CLEAN!

Did you test out the vacuum adjust headlights??

Nice find! I appreciate the pictures Good luck with whichever one you decide to buy!

Hey toomanyMBZ,

Would this 240D have EGR being a Euro? I've always wondered which ones have the EGR, I know for fact my '80 Federal didn't have it.

I think the EGR system was just on U.S. models. All of the Euro's I've seen don't have it.

that 'test' means nothing unless the cap really flew off.

You need to accelerate the engine with the cap loosened and determine how quickly it sits back down or measure the volume of gasses exiting the valve cover... or do a compression test.

^ I agree, a compression test would tell you more than looking at blowby too.

If it's got no rust, working A/C, working sunroof, solid mechanicals...and it's a euro, $2800 sounds like a deal

3 Bars oil pressure, all the time?

Is it just me, or do you wonder about how the manifolds got rusty? were they replace? (why?) is the rest of the shiny things under the hood added, or shined up to look good on 1st look . . .

Any rust hiding elsewhere?

When did they start putting the antenna on the front fender?

I like my 240
