headlights

Hi anyone heard of or ever used the "sabersport" brand of aftermarket lights for the W124? They are on ebay the link is below. Gotta be better than the USA version originals right?

I put a pair of Depo euro's in my 124 and am very happy with them. Euro look and better lighting, especially with 100 watt high beams!

I saw the depo ones but I am kind of liking the sabersport lights. I was wondering about fit/quality?

Interesting......also, apparently you can use the stock 4-prong connector with these, rather than having to purchase 6-prong connectors. Or am I missing something?

Ugh, depo is crap quality. Hold a depo in your hand and a genuine made-in-germany Hella or Valeo in your other hand. The differences will be VERY obvious.

That said, the actual pattern produced by the depo's is actually pretty good. It's just the quality of construction that is crap. I've found that depo's don't last more than about 3 or 4 years before things start to break.

I don't know anything about this "sabersport" brand, but at that price, they are made in china for sure. Also, if they are DOT compliant as the ad says, they will have plastic lenses. Not glass. So expect them to start getting yellow and milky in a few years.

There are DOT compliant glass lenses, there is no requirement for plastic lenses.

I do doubt that they're actually DOT approved though, although it looks like they molded the E and DOT into the (plastic) lense.

I doubt that the light pattern / output is much if any better than the early 124 DOT lights = dismal, but it's your money. Personally, I think that they're fugly, have seen photos of them on 124s and I wonder if the car owner has serious regrets once he sees them on his car.

Jeff, can you find us the photos you saw of these things installed? I'm happy with my (Hella) Euro headlights but would like to see these "Sabersport" things in a W124. I agree they're almost certainly made in China or elsewhere in the far east.

Save your money and get some real Bosch Euros or the nicest of all, 500E Euro lights.

Even the DEPO's make MUCH better light than the US 124 lights. I've driven LOTS of cars in my couple of million miles of driving and I've only driven ONE that had worse lighting than my 124 when it had US lights. That was a 37 Ford with sealed beams inside the factory lenses in place of the original bulb lights.

The Chinese ones referred to by the OP are not only cheapies, but they will look really funny on a pre 93 W124 because of the curve for the late model hood. Put them on the early model and they really look funny IMHO.

BTW, 100Watt bulbs in ANY lights will generate so much heat that the light fixture will last no time.

True for any car that I've seen, but there are motorcycle lamps that are made for that kind of abuse.

That's right - especially if they are encased behind plastic lenses, which these appear to be, and in front of plastic reflectors, which these also appear to be. Sabersport has also had to recall a bunch of their corner lights as well:

Not to argue, but I ran 100w bulbs in my Euro/Hella URquattro lights for over 10years with no issues. My original '91 TE Euros ran 100s also, worked fine (although I had to trim the off-road tab from the bulb bases).

There's a 124 on ebay about once a month with those lights, I'll look.

I have a set of Depo's on the '86 and I put a used set of Bosch on the '87.

The new Depo's have brilliant light and plenty of it. The Bosch, being "aged" provide less than half the light of the Depo's.

So, for all those who suggest to wait for genuine Bosch.........the condition of the glass and the reflectors might not be all that terrific after 15-20 years.
