300SD Was starting hard - now not starting!
Hey guys, I posted last week about my 81 300SD not starting quite like normal. After all the appreciated responses I figured it might need valve adjustment, which I haven't done yet (need to get the wrenches here). Well today I went on a 150 mile drive and on the way back it started missin some and getting sluggish at times. So I get home and change the spin on filter which wasn't old anyway. Started right up and then died and will not start. sorta tries to fire. The hand pump pumps thru the filter and gets like it is pumped up and the line from the filter to the ip seems clear. Did my IP take a dump? May be the original ip with 300k but engine only has about 160k. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure you gave it enough pumps? How long did you crank?

pumped several times and cranked several times 15-20 sec. Changed filters several times in past without this prob. I did just change the hand pump -hmmm- maybe better put the old one back on and try it. The new one seemed to pump thru the filter tho.

smoke like when running or when cranking? None running and did not look back there when cranking but it would at times try to fire.

Try loosening the Injector Hard Line Nuts. Crank the Engine and see if you are getting Fuel up there (for 2 reasons-to bleed the Air out and to troubleshoot to see of you are getting Fuel to the Injectors).
If you do; tighten the nuts and try to start.

Loosened the nuts on the top of injection pump and cranked it but no fuel. Pumps from primer pump thru filter to IP. Can something be plugged in it? Can it be cleaned somehow? Thanks.

I would pull the spin on filter again, and see if it is full of fuel. if not you are not getting fuel up there. Check to see if it smokes when trying to start. Then crack the lines at the injectors.
Sounds like a fuel problem, maybe what ever was leaking air before to cause the hard start is worse now? Just some thoughts trying to tie the two together.

How does the primary (inline clear) filter look?

The primary filter is clear fuel. Cracked injector lines and no fuel. fuel in filter from hand pump. I think lift pump is bad maybe. I saw somewhere here someone was talking about a rebuild kit for it but don't see one available here now. Anyone know?

when you pump the primer do you hear a hissing sound from your IP? if not you are not pumping long enough or you have a bad primer pump.

I hear a hissing sound but thought it was coming from the fuel filter return hose.

Start the car by injecting a spray of wd 40 into the intake with the air filter cover off and cranking after the glow plug interval. With someone in the car to start the engine.
You can nurse the run along with the wd 40 until the car picks up it's fuel. If it will not then troubleshoot the issue. I would directly gravity feed the pump with known good fuel as the next proceedure. This way the absolute cause is more readily identified in my opinion. It usually will not prove to be the injection pump. That does not mean it cannot be the fault though. The above test is better at totally separating the injection pump from other supply issues. What did you find?
I have run out of fuel in my '81 300SD a couple of times. Each time I just put some diesel fuel in the tank - about 1 gallon - pumped it with the hand pump then cranked it for something like two to three minutes without stopping. That's quite a long time but it started each time, caught up the fuel, and ran fine. |
