w210 98 battery charge saga

Hello,

I've been getting a "bulb out" warning when I step on the brake for a month. Then last week a "low battery charge" light came on while driving. This happens every day now. The car would start easily every day until last night when I glowed the plugs a couple times then it faided and gone. Today I relaced the battery but the low charge came back. Seems like something is draining or not chaging the battery while it running. Thoughts on diagnosing the problem?

What is the procedure for reseting the BAS and antilock codes after a battery change? I search and couldn't find it. I started the car no problem with the new battery then did the turn the wheel lock to lock a few times but the did not reset. How many times do I have to do it? should the car be running?

Thanks,
Jay

You can monitor voltage using the CCU. Press and hold REST 5-6 secs, toggle to screen 23 using AUTO buttons.

Ought to read +/-13V while driving.

I beleive you need to turn the wheel 2-3 times lock to lock to reset steering angle.

It's likely a bad alternator. If you have a bosch brand you can replace the regulator and brushes easily and cheaply. If yours is a Valejo like mine then you have little choice but to replace the entire alternator.

You can remove it and bring it to any good parts store or alternator rebuilder and they can test it in 5 minutes and tell you if it is the problem or not.

Done - Hopefully

Looks like it was the altenator. I measured the voltage with the car on at the battery and it was less than 12 volts. Replaced the Valeo with a rebuilt Bosch and all is good so far. Measuring 14+ volts at the battery. Thanks for the help.

I still have the bulb failure warning which comes on the first time I press the brake pedal. I cannot find any brake lights out. Could one be going bad but is not bad yet? Can I remove and measure them or should I just replace them one by one?

Thanks,
Jay

The bulb issue is probably a bad bulb holder if you are absolutely all bulbs are good.

Hello,

Should I look for some corosion on the bulb socket and wires and clean it up or is there something else I should look for?

Where can I get a reference for what all the info is on the CCU for my car? Looks like there is lots of good stuff in there. Lots of pages

Thanks,
Jay
