I was at Wal-Mart two days ago and looked around in their oil section. I saw that new purple color gallon bottle of Rotella. I took a closer look and it is all synthetic Rotella, 5W40 viscosity. There was no price on the bottle so I took it to their oil change section (next isle) and ask a sales person for a scan. It came out at $18.88 per gallon.

This must be an excellent oil for diesel or even gasoline engines, for that matter. But it is more expensive than Mobile 1.

I just bought 4 gallons of the 5w40 syn. Ouch! $80.00 or so.

Going to try it in both 300's in about a week when the oil is due.

I'm excited about the increased fluidity at cold temperatures. It reads like its an awesome diesel oil.

Update us on this synthetic rotella

Greetings,

I saw this new on the shelf at the local Wal-Mart as well, so please let us know how it runs out for you. Very curious to see if it's free flowing in cold weather and whether it cuts consumption.

Yes, definitely let us know what you experience in terms of cold starting, power, warm-up time, and leakage. I haven't checked our local Wal-Mart, but tomorrow is Black Friday...

I bought this oil as well and will put it into my '85 300D w/ 140k this weekend. It doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes, so i don't think I'll notice any difference in that area. I do expect to see improvement in regard to cold starting and soot control though. The only thing about it is that I have been unable to find any data online at either the Shell or Rotella websites. I'm sure that it's good stuff, but some imperical data would be nice.

Wow, it looks like lots of people have bought this new Rotella. Can anyone tell me what the C rating is? I think Mobil 1 is a CF, but regular Rotella is a CH-4... thanks, Bob

Man, I'm beginning to dislike Wal-Mart. I just got back from the second one in two days, and not only do they not have the new Rotella, they also don't have the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 for around $16 either. oh well, guess I need to make my rounds of some real auto parts stores, and/or truck stops.

I finally found a Wal-Mart, pretty far away, that carries synthetic Rotella, so some Wal-Marts do have it. Either mine is considered too far south to have it, or they sold out, or ?? Who knows? I paid $18.88 a gallon as well.

It could be in demand considering it's a new product, etc. Our local Supercenter didn't have it. I'm going to try it in another 1500 miles or so when I'm due for my "winter" oil anyway. If I get too much leakage I'll probably switch to Mobil 1 15W50 in the spring, and if I leak the Mobil 1, I'll switch back to the Dino Chevron Delo 400.

Any info / thoughts on whether the oil change interval could be extended ? ( sacrilege !!) I notice at 100 degrees C the specs say the 5w-40 is slightly more viscous than the 15W-40. So I guess you don't lose any high temp protection with the syn Rotella.
