So if the accident happened at 3:47am, she is on the shoulder with lights on or 4 way flashers, this will focus a tired driver or drunk to steer toward the lights.

some of our freeways here in calif. with the sound walls, do not have all that much room between the shoulder stripe and the wall. In this case, better to stay in the car. the shoulders vary with the terain and design.

we do know from the report that the 300D failed to proceed.

Wow, we can get touchy feelings if the mention of the type of fuel used or the method of delivery of said fuel to the engine is mentioned

Back in 03 when I was still working for Cal-Trans, we had an accident on Hwy-17. It was new Years eve, raining like crazy, slides all over, trees down etc.... there was an accident, flairs were already out to warn other drivers. CHP requested a Cal-Trans truck with a Flashing Arrow board to warn approaching traffic. Our guy pulles up behind the CHP, the two of them were discussing the plan af attack.

A BMW driving at a high rate of speed spins out, rearends the Cal-trans truck broad side on the drivers side of the bmw. shoved the truck into the back of the CHP car. kills the cop, and throws our guy into the open lane of traffic. He looks up and realizes he is in the open lane, crawls over the dead cop and up on the bank.
The bmw driver was killed instantly.

Sometimes things happen, even when trying to do everything right. can`t drive for the other drivers.

I feel bad for the girl and her family that this happened.

Charlie

Charlie has a good point, you just can't defend against some of these idiots, especially on roads like CA-17 over the Santa Cruz Mountains. It's just a mountain road that happens to have 4 lanes and a concrete barrier down the middle but folks treat it as a freeway and cause accidents all the time.

We drove to Monterey during the all-day rain of Oct. 13 (first of the season, too) and even though we took US-101 as far as Watsonville, thus avoiding 17, there were spin-outs and similar rainy-day accidents all the way down (175 miles). We lost count of the accidents, there were so many. Idiots just won't slow down.

Drunks do tend to fixate on lights; some experts advise not using flashers for that very reason, especially if the situation allows you to get way off the road.

Another learning for us all: the accident happened "early Saturday morning," meaning after midnight and before dawn, when the drunks are out. Many's the time I've read in our local newspaper of accidents, fatal or not, especially involving young people, in the wee hours. Sometimes we have no choice and have to be on the road due to work or personal responsibilities but if possible, the safest place to be at that hour is in bed.

Same thing happened to me this summer (21 years old) but a cop came and told me to sit in the car while he called a tow truck. Guess I was luckier.

Was it running out of fuel, mechanical failure, (or my guess) veggie oil? Either way a sad case...
So did you call the chp and tell them to stop their investegation???? since you already know what caused it!!!! I guess you know who killed jfk also!!! I have been a mechanic on diesels for over 35 years and never heard such bull in all my life and yes i have a 300sd. Diesel fuel was given the name because Diesel invented the engine and it ran on not diesel but peanut oil and to make things easier then named the fuel for it!!!! I and other know Peachparts are not all that great just like your comments. I know of people runniing veggie for over 100,000 miles and i have over 50,000 myself. just my 2 cents on this

My bet would more be that she was either leaning on or over the front of the car at the time... The whipping effect on her body from being hit in the rear of the car would have caused instant death...
The last time something was wrong with my car, it was warm outside, and I got my lawnchair out of my car and sat in the ditch till dad got there with a trailer to pick me up...
