Unhappy 300D - Fatal accident

From the local paper. I think she must have been standing in front of the car. 20 yrs old. What a shame.
-----------------------

Woman killed when her car struck from behind

A 20-year-old woman died early Saturday morning when her car was struck from behind on the 215 Freeway in Colton.

Bailey E. Sloan, of Riverside, was stopped on the right shoulder of the northbound 215 Freeway, north of Washington Avenue in Colton after her 1983 Mercedes 300D ran out of gas.

While on the shoulder, her vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2007 Saturn sedan.

California Highway Patrol officers and paramedics responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.
The CHP is investigating the collision

Bummer. I wish people would look where they were going.

And journalists would learn what the D in 300D stands for.

That's sad. If she was in front of the car, the Saturn had to be really moving to kill her.

Sad indeed.
The fuel gauge can stop working and the light never come on. I ran out of fuel at 3:30 am Christmas morning, on the interstate.

Is anybody else wondering if running out of fuel was really what caused the car to stop? There will likely be no more information released, but I'm guessing this could have been a Lovecraft car and running out of fuel was not the issue.

And why would any 20 year old, especially a girl, want a 1983 300d? Either they like the solidity/engineering/vintage/hipster qualities etc, it was the 'rents car, or to run veggie oil.

Was it running out of fuel, mechanical failure, (or my guess) veggie oil? Either way a sad case...

This is a sad story. It is IRRESPONSIBLE to speculate or link LoveCraft to the accident. It could have been any cars, any makes, any manufactures, any after market equipment added. Why link an accident to any alternative fuel or a particular vendor.

These are the first things I thought... Or borrowed the car, etc...

I cannot remember the last time I had a "breakdown". But, I know GET OFF THE ROAD COMPLETELY or the texters, cell phone drivers, eaters, make uppers, hair brushers, map readers, GPSers, beer drinkers or meth heads will kill you as well as themselves.

One thing nice about the most of the highways around here... You can pull wayyy off the road (up to 40 feet in some places) to get away from the traffic flow.

That is really sad... A bad way to go. I feel for the family. I wonder if the Saturn driver survived? They have to deal with it.

no ones "linking". Their speculating that her reserve light didn't work because it has been converted to veggie, which sounds reasonable since most 20 year old girls wont drive an old diesel car unless its a veggie car and they think their saving the planet.

She must have been in front of the car or not strapped in to get killed in this accident unless the saturn was traveling at really high speed. The rear crumple zones in these cars are incredible

I can't tell from the article whether the driver was in the car or standing somewhere outside of it. Seated in the car with seat belt on and headrest in position should have protected her fairly well even in an airbagless '83. We're not getting all the facts.

The typical advice you get from CHP types is to get out of the car and move as far away from it as you can.

Wonder if the 4-way flashers were working.

This is BS. They drive whatever they are given or can afford, like any other 20 years old adult. I feel sorry for the family, that is all I can think of, not any other wild imaginations.

Lovecraft's mere existence is/was Irresponsible. I'm fine with blaming them for most anything unpleasant.

That is a terrible thing that took place, my only question is WHY was the girl outside the car? I sure hope she was not pulling one of those famous "I think I'll stare at the engine until it works again" type things that so many people do. She should have stayed in the car and called/waited for help....much safer that way.

"While on the shoulder, her vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2007 Saturn sedan."

she might of survived had the car been equipped with a steering wheel airbag
