What kind of gasoline...

... do you use to flush out your fuel system?

What kind of damage do I need to watch out for after my wife filled the tank on my '81 TD with gasoline today? We had it towed to my favorite fixit guy (Group One Motorwerks in Tucson).

As long as the car has not been run yet, its an easy fix. Just drain the tank and lines, fill with diesel, and pump the primer pump for a while....then fire it up. All should be fine.

Just run it with diesel like you're supposed to. Perhaps use a diesel injection cleaner or something if you want.

Even if it did run, it usually doesnt do damage unless you work at it real hard. Cyl's are too hot and fuel ingnites at wrong time and engine knocks and stalls out. Drain it and go on with life.

It's possible to kill a 617 with gasoline (at least one member here had that happen), but it takes quite a bit of driving to do it. Don't try that with a Duramax or Powerstroke though. You will be out a very expensive set of HEUI injectors pretty quickly.

Luckily, she didn't make it very far before it wouldn't idle.

You may be thinking of me. I only drove it about 7-10 miles, but it was in stop and go traffic and the fuel was probably somewhere around 40-60 percent gas, the rest was diesel, just judging by the smell and look of it. I got it from a diesel pump at a station - I suspect they took a fuel delivery and the wrong fuel got put into the tank. They never admitted to anything.

Wasted my rod bearings.

My daughter filled a half empty 240 and took off on the highway from colombus ohio to Lafayette indiana. She made it to richmond ind before the thing would not run any more.

lots of damage to the engine.

a short while like you did should not hurt it at all. I would not do anything except drain the tank and fill with diesel and go.

I have also filled my dodge cummins with gas and driven a few miles home before fixing the problem with no noticable effects.

My son put gasoline in the 300sd earlier this year. I don't think there was much diesel fuel in it when he put the gas in. He drove it for about 75 miles before it overheated. It had almost no water in teh radiator!
He calls me up and asks "Does the temperature gauge work?"

I said yes, pull over right now!
Wound up towing it home.

I didn't do anythihng to it really. There wasn't much gas left in the tank, less than 1/4 tank. I just filled it up with diesel. Disconnected the fuel line under the hood and purged it till the diesel came out. then just pumped the primer pump a couple of hundred times. Oh and I did put tranny fluid in the filter.

Started right up, no problems. Though it is smoking more then before. I may have a head job in the future.

For your car you should have towed it home, you almost certainly have no damage. And draining and purging could easily have been done yourself.

Because the injection pump is not lubricated by the fuel a hit of gas won't hurt it under normal circumstances. Remove the improper fuel, put in the correct fuel, and continue on your way

Before getting too worried...
Remember that Mercedes recommends a certain amount of gasoline mixed into the diesel in really cold weather... I have forgotten the exact percentage..but it has been mentioned many times in the archives...

I think 20% is the max allowable.

That is one of the perks of buying a NEW car... the little ' user manual' to be carried in the glove compartment had that kind of info in it back in the day... diesel stations were listed also.....

Gasoline has less power than diesel fuel for the same amount.....
I am not too sure that on our engines the place on the crank stroke would be changed due to different fuel....since I think the hot air is already pushed into the precombustion chamber before the injection takes place....
If it were injected while the piston was down in the bore then it seems it would make a huge difference ...

On SOME of our old cars the injection pump is lubricated by the fuel... at some point a change was made...so do not assume without checking for your particular car on that point...

Yes it is. The plunger barrels are in direct contact with the fuel.
