Run on problem just starting- Opinions, please

My wife's 81 300D has just started having some run on problems (not shutting down as usual when the key is switched off). I had a small problem last spring with the linkage getting stuck when I was driving. I'd have to put my toe under the accelerator and lift it to get it to idle down. When I did some work under the hood, I noticed one of the ball and sockets in the throttle linkage was a little dry, so I pulled it apart and greased it, then had a rough time getting it back together, due to the socket piece being a tad crimped at the opening. It has worked fine all summer and fall, but I think now that the cold weather here in Missouri has started making appearances, that may be the reason for the running on episodes. Oddly enough, when I drive it, it doesn't do it. I'm thinking it could use a new linkage section at the point that I had problems last spring. Does anybody else have any other suggestions? Also, anybody have any good spare linkage they'd like to part with?

It's more likely to be a small vacuum leak someplace that's being aggravated by the weather. Check over all the vacuum connections under the hood.

Thanks, Craig, I'll check that, too.

It may be a pain to get the linkages on and off but they should be lubed every other oil change or so. Thanks

Those ball and socket connections just pop off and on.

Yeah, I usually lube them in the spring and fall when I do my oil and radiator flush, but this one particular link seem to have had a screwdriver mangle the socket a little somewhere along the way. The keeper ring isn't in very good shape, either. I've used white grease spray, something an old MG mechanic told me was the best thing since sliced bread, but I'm not real impressed with it. And I realize they pop off easily, but when they're nicked and mangled at the opening, they aren't so easy. That's why I was looking for another one. I'd ream the opening of this one out, but what about that lock ring in there? Where could I find one of those, or at least the size for a replacement? It's probably the vacuum, like Craig suggested. I just went out and jiggled the linkage around, and it seems pretty loose. Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. I'll let you know when I get this thing fixed. I'm now wondering about vacuum valves and stuff.

Pull off the brown vacuum line from the shut off valve on the back of the IP. Replace it with a piece of vacuum hose. With the engine running, suck on the vacuum hose. If the engine shuts down with no more than 3 sucks, your shut off valve is ok and you probably have a leak somewhere in the vacuum system. If it fails to shut off, probably a bad diaphragm in the shut off valve. If it doesn't shut off and you get a mouthful of oil, definitely a bad diaphragm in the shut off valve.

Thanks, I'll try that. The wife went to her dad's up north for the day, so it will be tomorrow before I can get to it, but I do appreciate the tip. I've always been a big believer in the idea that there usually is a good, tried and true way to get things done, but if you don't know that trick, you're lost. Thanks again.

I've had a shut off actuator work when pulling vac on that line, it was failing, as I installed a new valve, the shuts off with the key now.
