$400-600 depending on the market and engine condition.

Personally, I wouldn't buy an engine from someone that says they pulled it from a junkyard's car.

You want to be 1 step upstream, buying beaters, verifying quality to some degree and parting out.

There are plenty of motors that are good in the Junk yard. If you are the type who is on a crusade to save all those good parts, then have at it. (which I would love to do, but don't have the space)

But if your in it for the money, then it is not for you.

The issue of a junk yard motor is you don't know how it going to run when installed. If there is a problem... Then you'll have to decide who's problem is it?

I've got three right now. I would sell any of them somewhere in that range.

If you pulled it from a junkyard that offered you a 30day warranty, you would need to mount the thing and get it running within 30 days.......or else take it back. But, wait, most junkyards just give you a CREDIT, not money back.....so then you have to remove another engine.

The best engines to pull are those from wrecked cars ---- the worse wreck, the better; you know the car was traveling FAST.

Thats easy to do. Have an auxiliary battery in your truck, fill the engine with cheap oil, connect it to a bottle of fuel and start it. You won't even need to leave the junkyard parking lot to know if it runs.

I'd like to see a compression/leakdown test on any used engine that I would get ready to install.

well on a gasser you could do that in the yard. most yards allow air tools inside. you could take a compression tester and a few gallon contianer or air, and attach an air powered socket to the crankshaft and get yourself a compression test on at least a few cylinders before you went back to your car, cranked up your air compressor which would be connected to your portable generator, and filled it up with air again

Unless you can get the engines for free, and you don't consider your time to be very valuable, I think you would lose money considering the amount of time you would spend locating the engine, verifying its condition, pulling it out, cleaning it up, marketing and selling--not to mention if you had to warranty one. Figure out how long all that would take and charge your time at a reasonable rate, say $25/hr and add to the cost of the engine and I bet that would put the selling price out of range for most potential customers.

Try lowering your rate to say $10\hr and you probably still won't make money. If I got 20cents for every email I've answered about MB parts in the past year........I could probably quit my day job.

x2

You may be able to make some money on 'Pull to order' small parts as it is much easier to handle and ship. Engine or tranny is difficult to pull and condition always unknown.

Just hate to see those engines fall into the hands of the scrap yard ,its easy to say more than half are still good engines with some tlc.Pull them but also installing them into a customers car would be more likely the turn towards profitability.

I have an idea, chasinthesun.

I'll deliver the three 617 good engine cars to you, you pull the engines and transmissions out of them. We sell them for $500 a piece and we divide up the the money.
