I assume the $.55 is calculated based on the average cost of ownership for some midsize/ midprice sedan being kept for about 100k miles/ 4-5 years then traded in.

Is the engine and tranny still original?

I ask because I hope to roll past 500k on my odometer sometime soon. I'm hoping to do regular maintenance until something drastic happens. When it occurs i hope I have a steady job for that

Nope,I replaced the tranny (rebuilt) at about 250K miles (I don't think it was well maintained by the PO), and I replaced the engine (used) at 440K miles when it lost compression in one cylinder. I'm hoping I won't have to replace either again for a while, but we'll see what happens.

That's really a pretty funny statement when you think about it for a minute!

Well, they should really last longer than 250K with proper maintenance. When I bought the car at 150K miles, the tranny was a little glitchy, I never really got it to adjust correctly until I replaced it. I suspect it was on it's way out after 150K.

That's probably about right.............the depreciation in years four and five can reduce the cost per mile somewhat.

I agree, but if you buy a new e-class and drive it 100k miles in four years it will lose $30-40k of it's value. You would be better off starting with a 3-4 year old car for half the inital cost.

Cool. The whole lot of us will be hunting down MB diesels the globe over. And as time continues to pass we'll be saying, "Wow! Only 400,000 miles. This car's just broken in!"

I know. If I got a job that required me to drive 30k-50k a year I would find a very mint 1998-99 E300D with around 50k miles on it. Probably get it for say $10k and than roll 300k on it.
