Alternative Wagon Reverse Light

Well, I had to replace my reverse lights lens on my wagon and didn't like the idea of spending $32 a side for the replacements so I looked for an alternative. While I was shopping at Wally world, I found an alternative. They sell, for $5.88, an interior light. It has a switch on one side and is about 1/2 inch deeper and probably 1/16" shorter in length than the original but matched up pretty well in practice when I installed them. You don't have to fight with the black rubber sealer quite as much with these lenses.

Materials necessary:

2 x $5.88 interior lights from Wal-Mart
4 x 2" bolts to install lens with

Steps to install:

1)unscrew the lock ring around the outside of the power button on the new lens
2)place new lens in place and install bolt on the innermost (in relation to the vehicle) side.
3)tighten the bolt until it is resting against the lens
4)Install the opposite bolt and fully tighten until the lens is firmly resting against the seal
5)tighten the inner bolt fully

It's an interior light. Or are just after the lens?

Just the lens, was just the most inexpensive part that I could find that would fit the space.

Here's what I've been looking for. I think I need to do this for Smash....

I had considered that but I didn't want to have install a relay to handle the extra current. This solution resolves that problem without that being necessary.

300td reverse light lens alternative

I found that very light on etrailer.com for $6 plus shipping.
Search rectangle clear lens light ext/int.

Looks OK, except it sticks out more, so more vulnerable to parking damage.
I have a different problem since I replaced my damaged TD rear bumper with one from a sedan, which required mounting the lights under the bumper.
But later I broke both lights in a steep driveway. My inspector said that in Virginia they aren't required anyway, so for now I've removed what's left of them.
Meanwhile, I found some inexpensive, low-profile, clear LED lights. They hang down about half as far as the originals, and are much brighter.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I have the exact same problem. However mine came with a bumper from a sedan and has those lights bolted on to the lower part of the rear bumper which are extremely vulnerable still. One is completely missing so I am just going to replace it to match the existing pictured and spoken of in prev thread.
Here in Mass they require two reverse lights on a car to pass inspection.
Can you post any pics of what you are using? I was thinking of replacing the bumper with an original. But times are hard! til then looking for alts.
