Owner's manual mumbo jumbo

Perusing the owner's manual for the 240 this morning I encountered this:

Oil consumption depends upon the way of driving:
max. 1.5l/1000 km/230 m.p. Imp. pt.

I'm thinking it's a liter and a half per 1000km but don't know what the rest means after the second forward slash. Any translation help here? Doesn't 1.6 quarts per 621 miles seem like a lot of oil? Maybe I'm just used to gasser's. My Honda and Zuki don't use ANY in that many miles.

Makes sense, but then the first set of numbers don't even come close by my math. (which may indeed be faulty)

My owner's manual was missing the mumbo jumbo section. Somebody just ripped the last 15 pages right off that sucker.

Yup, I get
1.5L/1000km = 247 miles/imperial pint (used google conversion km -> mile and L -> im. pt.)

But the more useful conversion for most of us is:
1.58 QUART/651 miles OR
1 quart/412 miles

Which is just above what I am getting (I am getting about 500 miles per quart).

Hey Elchivito

I think you are getting your km/L and L/km mixed up

Clarification:- The first number you quote is a volume divided by a distance and the second number has the units of distance divided by volume.

According to Google an imperial pint is 0.568..... Litres
One mile = 1.6 kilometres

Assuming there has been some rounding of the numbers quoted in your owner's manual the ratios quoted approximately say (when twisted the same way up and converted into metric units) that usage of one litre within 666 kilometers can be expected - However if you do use that much I'd keep a close eye on the oil level as you only have 6.5 Litres or so to play with!

My W123 300D doesn't use any where near that much despite its leaky front crankshaft seal.

As a point of interest (or not) the same figures are quoted in a Dutch manual that I have but I can't find this information in the original German / Swiss manual...

My auto 240 uses maybe that much but it had been well used before I got it. The 4 spd gets maybe 1k per qt.

Thanks! I'm just starting to monitor usage. like a fool I didn't check the oil level before leaving Phoenix when I picked the car up a week ago. The oil level when I checked it was between the two dimples on the stick, which the manual says is ok, but was closer to the low notch so I topped it up to nearly full. Watching it now. The car doesn't smoke except for a minute when it's cold and has no leaks. Guess I'm just borrowing trouble....got my gallon of Delvac in the trunk till it's due for a change, just in case.

I think there's a pretty good range of oil useage. My 617 just used about 1.5 quarts in 4000 miles. Getting rid of all the leaks is a big help.

yeah, even in my own cars I have a wide range. I would estimate my wagon uses half as much as the 240D. But the 240D has less blowby and hardly leaks a drop while the wagon marks her spots.
