OT diesel tractor question

I have a Chinese tractor. I have jump started it for years. So now I am trying to get it so it will start like it should.
I had a small automotive positive cable on it. I changed it to a large cable like on the 300D. I can hear the start click, and if I jump it, the engine spins slowly. Do I also need the larger cable on the neg? it has 15w40 oil and it is 40+ outside.
What else should I look at?
The tractor has a compression release, os it is not fighting the compression of the engine.

thanks

I also have a small diesel tractor (Japanese). I would try beefing up the negative cable, make sure the battery is strong, and then if it still won't start without jumping you may have to remove the starter motor and check the solenoid switch for corrosion and the brushes for wear. The quality of Chinese-made equipment has improved greatly in the last ten years or so but some of the early stuff was pretty poor. How old is your tractor?

My tractor is about 12 yrs. old and has been great. It is a Rhino. Only thing I would change would be a front loader and power steering.

When you are using the starter what does the Voltage drop down to on the Battery?

I am thinking that if Jumping it works maybe you need a larger capacity of battery to begin with. The Voltage drop should give you some indication of that.

I will have to measure that. just across the battery when trying to start? Also it takes a lot of tries with the hey to get it to spin, but the sol. kicks in.
