84 300SD driver seat removal

I have read some posts here that say to rebuild the seat the whole assembly has to be removed. Say it isn't so, please.
I would think the top could be unbolted from the track and electronics unit that bolts to the floor.
Is this possible?

You need to unplug the motors, located on the floor near the front of the seat. Move the seat all the way back first to gain better access.
The back of the seat unbolts from the bottom, but you'll still have a wire between it and the seat bottom. You also need to get the whole thing out of the car. The motors are located in the seat bottom. No "electronics" involved.

Removing the entire assembly involves five screws that secure the track and the seat belt mount to the chassis and several electrical connectors. Takes about 10 minutes. I remove the rear seat bottom and maneuver the entire assembly out the back door..............top of the seat exits first (the seat is on it's side).

After getting it on a workbench, the top is unscrewed from the track and the electronics unit. There are six Phillips screws (USE #3). The problem with this task is that you'll probably need to power the seat bottom to get the center screw to align with the holes in the frame in order to remove it. You might need to power it to expose one of the end screws as well, depending on it's position.

You can power the motor on a bench using a 12V battery, or else you must return it to the vehicle.........a bit of a PITA.

Thank you Gentlemen.
I can't believe the MB designers would do such a stupid thing as this seat assembly. Build a seat top that is crap then make it so difficult to repair.
Thanks for your replies.

Actually, my seats work fine after 24 years. I wish that all of my 24yr old crap worked as well. Jerk it out the back disassemble, repair & reinstall. It's not very difficult, much easier than newer cars.

My seat worked as designed too, but one of the springs broke and I installed a manual one.
